Luggage Storage in Naples

I need help with the logistics of this leg of my trip next year. After staying a couple of days in Florence, I plan to take the early morning train from Florence to Naples. I have looked at the train tables and I have noticed that the earliest high speed train leaves Florence at 6:55 and arrives in Naples at 10:30 am. I was thinking about leaving my luggage (planning on a back pack and a 20" roller) in storage lockers and spending a couple of hours in the Arch. museum. Then I will leave Naples for Pompeii, to spend at least 4 hours there. I will then take the the Circumv. to Sorrento to spend the night.

Are there lockers in the Naples train station? I have been looking for this info in books and websites, including this one and have not found it. I guess I am concerned about targeting myself as an American woman traveling alone. I have heard storied that occasionally train lockers are picked and robbed. I plan on leaving no valuables in my bags.

What are your experiences? What do you think I should do?

Ed posted a trip report of mine that might help. Go to http://twenj.com/ click-on "Rome" and then "Pompeii" on the sidebar. The Naples Centrale Train Station has a *manned* luggage storage area, follow the signs which is a box [ ] with a suitcase profile in it. It's located just down the hall from the last track (24-26?).
And the Pompeii site has an unmanned luggage storage area next to the ticket collecting booth.
The Arch Museum also has a coat/bag check area if you want to leave your backpack. Just remember all my info is pre 9/11 and I don't know if any security changes have been made???
Safety wise, don't be afraid of physical harm, just be aware of theft (pickpockets or unattended bags disappearing). If any men approach you in the train station they are probably just illegal taxidrivers, hotel hawkers or Romeo's. Don't make eye contact just act like they don't exist and you don't understand what they are saying. HTH Regards, Walter
Hi,

This past summer we put our luggage in a storage area at the Naples train station. There were two men who guard the lugage and charge per suitcase. There was 8 of us and this worked out nicely. There are also lockers, but my memory is that you put in a certain amount of money for how long you are gone. the locker then automacticaly unlocks after the 1 or 2 etc. hours. Therefore if you do not get back in time, your bags are not protected. I was nervous about the storage area but it served us fine. Good luck

Walter and Sue, thank you so much! I will probably use the watched storage area. That sounds like a good bet.

Walter, thanks for the advice. I am not worried about physical violence, but petty theft puts a damper on one's vacation. By the way, did you leave any bags in the Pompeii unmanned storage area? If so, no one had any problems?
Suzanne: I'd say the Pompeii luggage area is fairly safe. The site entrance is alittle off the beaten track and is like a small outdoor courtyard. With an ATM, ticket office, bookstore and a police substation right across from the luggage area. Rereading your post I saw I was mistaken, I was thinking of a daypack not a big backpack. That would make it easier to secure from theft if you lock the backpack to the roller. With either a bicycle cable combo lock, the cable locks sold in luggage stores or a small chain (dogcollar) and a small (luggage) lock. A thief would attract far too much attention trying to walk off with a backpack that's dangling a 20in roller off it, or vice versa). They would just grab another bag and quickly be on there way. Also the Eurostar trains are safe but for the piece of mind you could also lock your bags and go to b'fast without worrying about them and a cable lock could come it handy in other places. HTH Regards, Walter

Hello all. I was wondering the exact same thing and found this thread in a search.

So there are two different options, a guarded area and lockers that unlock on their own if you don't get back in time..... is there a time limit to how long you can leave a suitcase in the guarded area? I need to store a rolling carry-on bag for about 36 hours.
If anyone can tell me more about this it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Sandi

This is a stupid question, I know.

If anyone can tell me more about this it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Sandi
