Luggage Dilema
I will be in Paris for a month. I have one large suitcase and two small wheeled bags (21" and 18"). Will this be enough or too much? I've heard to pack as light as I can and make sure that you can carry your luggage yourself. Also I have a camcorder I'm bringing. Should I pack it in the checked bag or bring it with me on the plane? Thanks.

This sounds like far too much luggage to me. Since you can't possibly pack enough clothing for a month, you are going to have to do laundry at some point. I would take just one suitcase (a good sized carry-on), and plan on doing laundry a little more often.

Hi
Without knowing you and what kinds of activities you plan to participate in it's hard to tell you how much to take.
However, just based on manageability,
I agree with Cheryl that all your pieces sound like too much, unless you can afford to ship some of it ahead.
Take clothes that can be laundered, and that can be mixed and matched: dark colors, a blazer and/or a nice sweater or two, perhaps a silk scarf to accessorize a bit. This forum has been full of varying opinions about what to wear in Paris, but I would recommend wearing a comfortable pair of shoes and perhaps packing a "dressier" pair, although they could still be comfortable.
I would keep it down to one manageable suitcase to check, and one carry-on that includes the camcorder. Even less would be better of course as Cheryl recommended, but that's a personal choice. Don't put valuables or essentials in checked luggage.
Good luck.
If you are going to be staying put in one place for a month you don't need to be as conservative with your packing as someone who is going to be getting on and off trains a lot. And if you are planning to take cabs to/from the airport then pack as much as you want to be comfortable, and not have to do laundry every 3 days! Still, its best to be able to carry your luggage yourself, its a pain if you always have to go looking for carts and stuff. That large suitcase sounds dangerous, if it has no wheels. Don't pack it so heavy you can't lift it. 3 bags is probably too much. stick to two. And do carry on the camcorder, as well as any jewelry and any prescription drugs.

Great minds must think alike. I agree with Beth. If you are going to just one destination then you can live through the inconveince of managing a lot of luggage. The first inclination is that you are taking too much, but who could stand wearing the same things over and over again for a solid month? I always have a problem with Rick Steeves advice of wearing one outfit and packing one extra pair of pants and one extra shirt, etc. and go tripping for weeks around Europe. No can or want to do. Sorry Rick.

Carts are not a problem at CDG. Get one or two while waiting for your bags. They are right there at the baggage claim area. Forget about trains and buses. Take a cab and pay the extra money. The driver will take care of your bags and the hotel will on the other end. Good advice to use several smaller bags than one big giant one. Easier to handle and pack in the cab.

You can still cut down on what you bring by planning on doing laundry while in Paris and still have enough variety. See another posting on this question, today.

The other posters are correct with their advice of limiting what you bring especially if you have more than one destination. However, with just one destination, knock yourself out and bring what you like. It will only cost a few extra dollars to the baggage handlers and it will be worth it in the end.

And heed Elaine's advice ... do not pack any valuables or essentials (medicines?) or your camcorder. Always carry them on the plane.
