Does anyone know how many suitcases each person is allowed to take over seas? We are thinking of flying either Delta or Air France (Chicago to Paris). And, are you allowed 1 or 2 carry-ons??

As far as I know, each person is allowed to bring 2 suitcases and 1 carry-on bag. The carry-on bag can't be too big or too wide though. But it can be a backpack or a small bag or something like that. Also, each suitcase can't weigh more than 32 kg, as far as I know. Since I am a woman, I am allowed to bring a purse and a backpack as carry-on. But usually it's just one piece of carry-on. If you are not sure, you can always contact the airline directly, and most airlines have websites where you can check what the luggage requirements are. But I am a frequent traveller (travelling back and forth between the US and Germany) and I always take 2 suitcases, a purse and a backpack. That's about the maximum amount of things you can take. Norm is 1 carry-on bag + 1 personal item (purse or laptop) on the plane with you plus 2 suitcases checked in.

Weight and size restrictions vary so you need to ask each airline or read the rules on their websites.

I would definitely check your airline's website for weight restrictions.
We recently flew Delta, codesharing with Air France, to Greece. On all flights, the people checking in before us had to pay an excess weight fee or repack at check in...most just took some items out of the bag to be checked and stuffed them into carry-ons.
We fly internationally ususally twice a year and have not noticed this before...could have been coincidence, or they're really weighing all bags.

Air France and Delta are partners. So the flight you are looking at may be the same one (code-share for one, actual # for other). Pays to look at both sites for the flight prices since I have found that the price on the actual airline (not code-share) is usually cheaper.

No matter which airline you fly, you are allowed only one carry-on and a personal item. The dimensions and weight are dictated by the airline (check websites or call).

Note: Delta and Air France have different carry-on restrictions (Air France more restrictive). You need to find which airline's plane will actually be used since that airline's restrictions will apply. Since you will be going to France, most likely the flight will be by Air france with Delta code-share. Air France's restrictins will apply whether you have a Delta ticket or an Air France ticket.
