Nelson, you are right. Exactly the same thing was happening in snow at -2C and d car and our foot was slipping.
I should do some more research on driving in adverse conditions.

Like I know how to drive through a slightly water logged zone (upto maz 2 feet for a shorter distance) that you keep moving at a slow speed but never stop or leave ur foot from the accelerator or else water will enter the silencer

PARAGKASH1, thank goodness you and your family are safe!

We decided we could not deal with the snow and cold in Vienna, and departed yesterday to a last-minute resort booking in Croatia. The drive toward Graz was horrific in the higher elevations; slippery road conditions, snow, and high winds. We had not yet changed the winter tires off the car and were very thankful we had been remiss in that regard! Driving speeds were reduced to almost 40kph at points. Along the way we passed a serious accident in the opposite direction; traffic was backed up at least 5km. I was driving and did not exhale until we cleared the elevation.

Glad you are all ok. Nice to see your reaction was imo the right one : kids ? Wife ? Car broken ? Just metal.

For info you should not get into first gear on snow or ice. Get into second gear it will be smoother.

What a terrible experience! I'm so glad you're all safe. It's easy to second guess yourself after something happens, but you did the best you could in the circumstances and no one was hurt. It could have turned out so differently. Great job on trying to focus on the positives!

I am glad you are safe and everything has been dealt with so efficiently.
Next time do not stop at the bottom of the slope but use your momentum, and second gear to go up it. As Wo says it is better to pull away in second gear if it is at all slippery.
I hope the weather improves for the rest of your stay.

Many people have already said their sympathy, so will do I. I am really happy for you all, that you are alive and unhurt. Let it be the worst experience in your life, so you won't get into anything as frightening as that.

Yikes! You are bound to be traumatized for awhile after something like that, but it sounds as though you are moving forward and making the best of it. Don't let it spoil your vacation, just be careful out there and stay home when the weather's bad! Best wishes

So sorry to hear about your ordeal. I know you plan meticulously and completely understand your decision to venture out to Linz with the expectation that the snow will melt. No one can predict these things. Appears that everyone starting from the rental company and the police etc have been helpful along the way. I hope the weather improves for your drive to Bled on Sat.

Hi everyone.
Am so touched and overwhelmed by everyone's concern and support.

The weather was excellent 10 c and sunny and we could visit Hallstatt, Bad Ischl, Bad Share and Grundlsee.

I could overcome the initial hitch in driving and managed to drive smoothly without any problem.
Will slowly get over the trauma and the images flashing in front of my eyes.

Dear Paragkash1, as someone who survived a car accident at home but struggled after to feel safe driving again, I completely sympathize. It took three long weeks of forcing myself to drive before I felt that I wasn't going to be killed at every intersection. I cried from fear and anxiety every time I drove for the first 5 days, but it gradually got better. It's been three months and I'm pretty much back to normal. I applaud you for getting back on the road and yes, you will overcome the trauma.

Best. NOLA

Glad you are OK. You shoulda stayed in Linz, or wherever!

I stopped fully to pick it up the slope in 1st gear and the car started sliding down the slope.

Don't do that--shift into 1st and keep moving on snow. You are right however, don't brake on ice!

Nola, I exactly know what you must have gone through.
I have my children with me and have to teach them not to live in any Kind of fear.
And I know that the only way to overcome it is to face it.

We had 2 ways of getting out of Grundlsee.
I chose the one that passed through my accident spot. Kainisch is the exact name of the place.
While driving I could relive all those moments.

But was feeling fortunate to be fit n fine and with my family.
Also realized that a few meters ahead or behind would hav been a disaster. Only about 100 meters of patch where it happened had flat ground with ice over it on the side.
Rest was a bit deep valley.

The weather was good today.
We were happy and chirpy after that point

Only blunder I did in doing the recce of my drive was that I forgot to take out 4 passports from the safe in the resort room.
We realized it when we passed a toll booth on the autobahn about 180 km away out of 250 km that we had to cover.
Drove back in frustration for the moment. This happened for d 1st time un my life.
Passed the same spot twice again. Drove about 650 km. In the day.
My room at Bled has a fantastic lake view. N we all r happy again

March and the first half of April has been unusually warm. The snow and frost should have been here in March and not this late in April. Many people have changed their winter tires to snow tires.

Last Wednesday, I had a friend stop by who said that there was snow on the Autobahn from Küssnacht to my place. I had just come from another direction where there had been snow but it hadn't stuck to the road. These cold fronts are incredibly unpredictable and can be specific to small regions.

I had an uncle who saw an accident on an icy road, pulled over to help the person and was ultimately killed by another car who slid into him. There are many good reasons NOT to help someone in your predicament, I'm afraid. Also, many drivers were using the car's momentum to continue up the hill and by stopping, would no longer be able to make it.

Yes, you were lucky but you were also aware of what was going on about you which may have saved all of your lives. I'm glad you're OK but understand why you're shaken. You may be for awhile but that's OK.

Enjoy and feel the love and support of the family.

Yes, I know that the people who didn't stop were justified.
Everyone did their best in given conditions.
Weather is better in Slovenia.
