Lucerne

Going to Lucerne in June. Deciding between Hotel des Balance and the Art Deco Montana Hotel. Any recommendations.
Hotel Des Balances probably has the best location - right on the river in the old town. Prices are about the same. If you didn't know, Des Balances is a Best Western hotel & you can look it up on their web site.

Judy: Both are great places, but the Balances is right in the middle of all whereas the Montana is a bit out of the very center. If you get in to the Balances -- which I do hope for you -- you can still go for a meal at the Montana.

Have a nice trip!

PS: Lucerne's official site is:

www.stadt-luzern.ch

You'll find a lot of useful infos when going to the English version.

judy,
I stayed at the Balances last November and loved it! My room was right on the water with a view over to the old Jesuit Church. I enjoyed seeing the legions of swans gathered there every morning. Their restaurant is fabulous too. Their website is www.balances.ch, I believe.

s

I keep wanting to copy and paste the original message. Sorry, that comes from years of being on AOL. ;-)

Anyway, I stayed at the Des Balances Hotel in Luzern. One of the other posters said that they had a room that looked out at the Jesuit Church. That was my situation also. I had a great view of the Church and the Reuss River.

This hotel is not far from the Luzern train station. The front side of the hotel looks out over one of the squares in the old town.

As for the Montana, I met a lady that stayed at the Montana. The Montana is about a 10-15 minute walk from the old town. It looks out over the lake. It has a nice restaurant that has a deck where you can sit out and enjoy the views of Lake Luzern as you dine.

I remember taking this funicular up to the hotel from the street.

Also, the Montana had a nice piano bar that attracted many people.

As I recall, the Montana was less expensive than the Des Balances, but that is probably due to the Montana being a little further out.
