Shame on Lucca for extorting such obscenely high fines from naive tourists or ones who made an honest mistake and new it.
Why do we only hear this coming from Italian cities?</i>
Who, in their right mind, would drive in any Italian city?
Of course, those idiots who do drive in any Italian city are also idiot enough to not recognize a "DO NOT ENTER" sign. The "DO NOT ENTER" sign is ubiquitous throughout Europe. Attention all idiots::: Please select another form of suicide/manslaughter.

One of the reasons I always buy a really good guidebook is to make sure I have advance information about local driving laws, signs, etc. I can't swear it would have worked in bblount's situation, but it's certainly a strategy that has come in handy for me over the years!

PQ you win !
There have been lots of threads with the and comments ...
I am sure Italy is targeting tourists only. And especially US ones because tourists from other countries don't get caught that often.
Besides it will not help ... Kja gave you a much more intelligent answer.
I would add that if I am not mistaken my GPS tells me when I enter a ZtL.

crosscheck, I stayed down the block from your Florence hotel for a couple evenings this summer, here:

Great area for me, a slightly crowd-averse culture vulture who likes good food and good wine.
One-way street put me (I think) in a ZTL zone for a block in Spoleto, also this summer. Waiting for the other shoe to drop.
