Well, I found Lucca positively charming and have longed to go back ever since our first visit. Granted, we were only there for two nights, but didn't feel we barely grazed by what was possible to see and do. I also can't answer the day trip question, but it seemed train connections were plentiful. I would love to be there with enough time to feel that I had the free time to walk the walls on a daily basis! What's better than getting your exercise and soak in atmosphere at the same time? To me, bottom line is if you feel drawn to an area, go there! There will always be detractors.
