Lucca

Anyone been to Lucca around the end of June recently? Sounds like a great place to be and to take short day trips from. I'm wondering if its crowded or not so much then.

Not quite the end of June...but we were there second week of July last year. The city was busy but certainly not over-run or crowded, especially if you've just been to Venice. Weather was nice, just in time to provide relief from last year's early heat wave.

Best of all, you can take a walk around the top of the wall, just like a park ringing the city.

Can't report on day trips, we weren't there long enough.

We went in May. It's cute, but to be honest, I didn't see there was all that much to do there. The rampart wall was one of the best park areas we saw of all the places we visited in Italy. Definitely rent a bike and ride the trail around the city. Other than that, it was pretty quiet and lower on my list of places you must see.

We stayed in Lucca several days and must admit we got a little bored. (It was supposed to be a rest stop.) Do you have a car? Assuming so, you can drive north into the Garfagnana, forested hills. Barga is supposed to be nice: www.slowtrav.com/italy/tuscany/barga.htm

Also there are a number of villas in the Lucca area that make good day trips. Here's a list: http://www.welcometuscany.it/tuscany...cca_villas.htm

We went to the Villa Reale at Marlia, where you could only visit the garden. But it was an interesting garden, laid out the the famous French landscape architect Le Notre at the direction of Napoleon's sister. However, the elderly guide only spoke Italian, well, Italian and sign language.

We visited Lucca half day some 2 weeks ago enroute to Firenze from CT and it was not particularly crowded. However we must say we were a bit disappointed as there wasn't really that much to do or see.

We found the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro Romano a disappointment and the 5Euro/p climb up to the Torre Guinigi overpriced.

However we did have an exceptional meal at the Buca di Sant'Antonio.
