TDudette, We enjoy just about everything. I am no great foodie so that is not a priority! We love walking, sight seeing, riding bikes, visiting churches, and cafes and pastries and talking to the locals. Even though our French isn’t great, we manage nicely!

We spent a week in Menton in November one year, so definitely at slow season--and loved it. Took day trips to Tende and surrounds (at the suggestion of Fodorites) and loved it all. We also LOVE Cassis, and if you can be assured by others here that it isn't shut down in your time frame, I would surely put it high in the running for your pick. In fact, Cassis for one month and Menton for the other might be a perfect combo. You're spoiled for choice on this and I envy you totally. You probably can't miss.

I'd either go fully south or La Rochelle which has its own pcoket of weather very similar to the south, despite being halfway up on the west.

I've been told a few things close down in Menton in the offseason, but I've never seen this first hand (I have a place in Nice). Then again the month before is the largest festival of the year in Menton (the citrus festival). It is the mildest winter/early spring weather in all of mainland France. As Stu notes, the transport connections are best in Nice. If you have a car, it could make more sense to locate more central in the region (even in Antibes or Vence, in addition to Nice itself). Note due to the floods this fall, the highway route to Tende/Saorge and certain other places are completely washed out, but the train is still active -- the repairs/detours may be in place for a while (detours are not even an option for some of the towns impacted). .

OMG.....such detailed and wonderful support for this thread. I will check out all suggestions! I will surely find a spot! I think France is our favourite European Country although Turkey and Italy place second and third. Thanks so much for all the quick responses! I hope we are not too old by the time we can travel safely again!

And I also second Menton. There's something 'very safe' about Menton. I mean that as a compliment. It too, would provide easy access to a number of worthy daytrips: The Riviera of course. One might visit for example St. Agnes, Saorge and even Italy.

At that time of the year, I’d go with somewhere on the Cote d’Azure, flying into Nice.
Nice itself would be a good bet if you are not planning to have a car as it is the travel hub and has plenty to do for a couple of months.
Menton is pretty but I would probably prefer to base myself in Antibes for a smaller place to Nice.
