A slightly younger version of Harrison Ford would be perfect.

harrison ford? pierce brosnan??? Robert Langdon was no james bond or indiana jones. he was a writer. sophie was the agent who came to his rescue.

nicholas cage did a similar role (nerd biologist turns hero) for the Rock.

I'd just stay home and watch reruns.

I enjoyed the book, even though I thought it was poorly written, and I'm sure I'll see the movie. Might wait for the DVD to come out as I'm sure it will have lots of fun extras.

I have NO image of Robert because to me, he was a cardboard cutout with zero personality (the writer's fault, IMHO).

I adore Julie Delphy, though, especially after seeing Before Sunset recently. She's utterly captivating. Any nerdy hunk will do for Robert, although Nicholas Cage makes my skin crawl most of the time.

Elaine, LOL. I agree, but then, how could anything be WORSE than the Bridges of Madison County book? Actually, I think Clint did an amazing job of creating a good film from a truly awful piece of tripe.

Like Marilyn, I rather enjoyed the book, but also thought it was poorly written - definitely not great literature! In fact I was quite disappointed, after all the hoopla. But I'm sure I'll see the movie, if just for the scenes of Paris and London. Tom Hanks might be fine - but I'd rather see Pierce Brosnan!

Tom Hanks is wrong! How about George Clooney. I bit overaged.....a bit gray and could play a bit tired very well. Or Jeff Bridges....or even Dennis Quaid....but Clooney is my first choice. Hanks is just soo wrong. I guess Howard just wanted old pals w/ him in France. Sad!

The book is a good story, not every book has to be great literature.

How about Gary Sinise?

Ah, someone said the magic word 'scenery'. It's going to be tough for me to stick to my outrage and boycott the film, but I'll do my best. I'm still embarrassed that I rented an airhead flick filmed on Santorini just to watch the sunset (don't even try to recall the title, your mind has other things to do). By the way, Barbara, I think you're absolutely right about Gary Sinese. J.

Gary Sinise is a great idea.
Which in the 6 degrees of separation game brings us back to Tom Hanks!

Does anyone know when they will begin shooting and in what area? We will be there from May 23 to June 3 and are hoping that it will not be during that time. As much as I enjoy Tom Hanks' films I don't want to dodge him and the film crew to see sights such as the Louve and St. Germain area, where we will be staying. Anyone know how to find out what the shooting schedule will be in order to avoid the chaos?

Elaine, I thought Kevin Bacon was the locus of that game.

Badly written, poorly premised book. Exactly what sells.

Tom Hanks is the best choice I've seen here, because he's an actor, not a dopey pretty boy totally lacking in range like the rest mentioned. Harrison Ford could also do it, as could Dustin Hoffman or Robert Duvall. The rest of them, no matter how hard they try (and you can see them efforting on the screen) can't seem to become the part they're playing, so you get stuck with George Clooney or somebody plastered on the screen, rather than the character. To me, this detracts from the experience. YMMV.

I'm amazed Ron Howard would have anything to do with it. He sure doesn't need the money.

They will start filming at the Louvre (nights and on Tuesdays) in May. The French newspapers published on Friday that the "Sophie" role is going to Audrey Tatou. Not sure she will be able to pull a strong "Sophie", but we'll see, that'll be the challenge for the director Ron Howard. My choice would had been Sophie Marceau or Kate Winslet.

Barbara--- Gary Sinise is the best name I have heard for the role of Langdon. You should be in the casting business, girl! Tom Hanks, as excellent actor as he is, there is no "darkness" to him, which is essential to pull off Langdon.

I thought Hanks was suitably "dark" in Road to Perdition. Sinese on screen is still Sinese.

On destinationparis.com, Michel has posted that Sophie has been selected over Audrey. You can read the press release there.
