Looking for suggested spots to stop in Western Switzerland or Eastern Austria, on roadtrip from Germany to Italy.
Hi, Everybody!

My husband and I have decided to rent a car in Frankfurt and drive it Florence (in late May). I realize the drive can be done in one day flat, but we'd like to take our time (maybe stretch it to two days travel time from Frankfurt to Florence). We are trying to select a route from A to B that will be scenic. Can anyone suggest points of interest along the way, in either Switzerland or Austria? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated; have never driven through (or been to, for that matter) that section of Europe.

You might want to repost your question and change your direction references. I expect you meant eastern Switzerland or western Austria. The trip, in any case, warrants more than two days, simply because of the scenic wonders (besides the Alps) that you can encounter.

Whoops, you are right Wes. My dyslexia must have kicked in again ;-)

so you think two days is barely enough to get through the Alps? You've given me very good advice so far (yesterday you responded to one of my postings), so I will reconsider based on your feedback.

You could give it two months! I would opt for three days, two nights minimum, unless the pressure to get to Italy is much greater than you've conveyed to us.

I'd pick Weggis, Switzerland (on Lake Luzern) - - as pretty as the city of Luzern, and half as expensive for a wonderful hotel.

Then Menaggio, Italy.

Worst part is you may regret not having a week at each place.

Best wishes,

Rex
I'd certainly agree that somewhere around the Lucerne area and somewhere on Lake Como would be two great stops. Weggis and Menaggio, as already suggested, are two really neat places; but there are many, many others around Lake Lucerne and Lake Como. You could most likely take two routes through the Alps: the Gotthard Pass or the Simplon Pass. I personally like the Simplon because there are less tunnels.
