Looking for lakeside luxury resort in Germany

Taking a quick trip (3-4 nights) to Germany in July and looking for a place to relax. Preferably lakeside, large pool, spa would be a plus. Any ideas?

Yes, yes, I know - Germany is not Austria!!
But please do look at the website below.
The White Horse Inn , St. Wolfgang stands alone and I think you will agree that the website does look inviting. I would be interested to read your view after perusing.

Otherwise, what about Lake Constance, Germany - and of course visit the nearby island of Mainau.

Try: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Constance

Not the best site available, but type Lake Constance into Google and look up the other more picturesque versions of the town.

Where in Germany?

If oriented a bit to the North, there is the Radisson SAS Resort Fleesensee - about half way between Hamburg and Berlin in the quite beautiful area around the Mueritz Lake (lots of adjoining lakes).

If beachfront would also qualify, there is also the ultra-luxurious Kempinski Hotel Heiligendamm on the shores of the calm Baltic Sea.
The only trouble with it is that while the hotel is great, they have sold the complete village to the Investment Fund owning the hotel and while they did install the luxury hotel, they have not yet renovated most of the neighbouring villas and mansions.

Yes, if you'll consider beachfront, the Dorint Sofitel Soel'Ring Hof. A beautiful, elegant small hotel on Sylt. Spa facilities. Right on the beach. Has more of a sophisticated private counry house feel (only 15 rooms). Not at all what you would expect from a hotel chain. They have a photo gallery and virtual visit tour on their web site:

Thanks everyone for the responses so far--I'd prefer something inland (not seaside) since I'll most likely be flying into/out of Frankfurt and also spending some time in Nuremberg.

lomajay-Thanks for your recommendation re: the White Horse Inn. It's a great recommendation and I actually stayed there back in 1993 on my first trip to Austria. I had some great venison in elderberry sauce at their restaurant.

I'm leaning towards Lake Constance or Lake Chiemsee, but I'm having trouble finding suitable accomodations.

WOW! I just looked at the hotel in St. Wolfgang, it looks fabulous and it's only3 0 miles from Salzburg. I'm seriously thinking of changing my original plans of staying at the Golden Ente in Salzburg and staying in this beautiful area over a lake. What are the opinions, is that a good or bad idea from anyone that's been in those areas.

Eloise- Thanks for this. We actually stayed at the Steigenberger on Lake Constance a few years ago. It's very nice, but I'm looking for something more resort-like. The Steigenberger is very much a business-type hotel.

suze1- You definitely get a different perspective staying in the Lake District, than Salzburg. On our trip, we spent two nights in Salzburg and two night at St. Wolfgangsee, which was a nice blend of both worlds. If you ahve the flexibility, you may want to split your stay.

PalQ- Thanks for this as well. I guess I'm being picky, but I'm looking more "European spa" than German Health Resort "Kur." To me, the Germans tend to use the word "spa" in a little different manner than what I'm accustomed to.

2 days in Salzburg and the 2 days in the Wolfganse, sounds perfect to me. I guess it doesn't matter which one we go to first.

Even though it sounds perfect an afterthought, it wouldn't save time to stay in one spot and not move hotel to hotel. Thoughts on this.

LoriS & Suze1
For further info thought you both may be interested in the following website around Lake Constance which lists the many nearby attractions worth visiting - you both may have to extend your time spent in the area!!

mikeyb,

Nothing snobbing about it. I'm looking to get away for the weekend to relax, not to sightsee or play tourist. I'm looking for a resort type of property (Lakeside with a view, a pool, and preferrably a spa).

So far, I haven't found any accomodations that have all of these requirements.

lomajay and treplow- Thanks for this, I'll check these out.

Suze1- It depends on your travel style, mode of transportation, and amount of luggage. We concentrated all of the "city" part of the trip with the overnight stay in Salzburg (we stayed at Hotel Kobenzl) and then the "lake district" part of the trip with the stay in St. Wolfgangsee. I'm not sure that it would save any time to daytrip into or out of the city for the other two days.

Hi LoriS,

Well, the hotels I'm going to suggest aren't in Germany, but I see you're not having much luck finding the right place. So I'm going to suggest some in Switzerland --

On Lake Lucerne, there are three five-star hotels right on the lake. You can find them at www.luzern.org, then search for the five-star hotels. While I don't know them personally, I'm sure they'll have spa facilities.

On Lake Geneva, try the five-star Hotel Trois Couronne (www.hoteltroiscouronnes.ch) in Vevey. I believe it fits the bill.

Good luck!

For me Lake Constance will not work, I need to be close to Salzburg. I've decided I would take LoriS's suggestion and do 2 nights in Salzburg and 2 nights by the Lake. Wolfgangsee and Berchtesgaden are close to Salzburg so I need to find somewhere on a lake in either one of those areas. The White Horse Inn would be ideal except for the price, a room with a patio over the lake, which is a must if I stay there is $275.00 per night, WOW! Can anyone suggest another hotel right on the lake for a lesser price. Looking at the different web sites there's so many places that it's almost impossible to identify the ones over a lake. Is Hotel Kobenz on the lake and what is the web site if it is. Thanks for all your help.
