looking for good small hotels

We'll be in several locations on a September trip. Anyone have any good recommendations for small hotels in Zurich, Lucerne and/ or Strasbourg? I'd appreciate any comments, good or bad. Thanks.

In Strasbourg, we stayed at:

Hotel de L’ill
8 rue des Bateliers
67000 Stasbourg
(33) 03 88 36 20 01
Fax: (33) 03 88 35 30 03
340 ff per room, per night

The rooms were smallish, but it was in a good location & the staff friendly. There was a GREAT late-night kebab place around the corner!
Since Switzerland is rather expensive, what's your price range? For example, people on this site recommend Hotel Des Balances in Lucerne, but it's about $240 a night. Just across the square is the Hotel Krone which is about $140 a night & almost as good (both are BWs).

alice,
Although it's not "in" Zurich, I recommend the Ermitage, still on Lake Zurich. It's actually in Kusnacht, about a 10-minute ride on the S-bahn (and about a 10-minute walk from the S-bahn station) or 20-minute taxi ride. It's a small and cosy hotel and a recent addition to the Relais & Chateaux group.

Write if you need/want more info!

s

Hi Alice in Zurich we enjoyed the recently renovated Gloken Hof hotel great location in the heart of Zurich.
This is an OLd hotel with a long tradition totally renovated last year
it is a 4 star, it is not small, small but it is not big, we found the service very good, the restaurant excellent and reasonable, do not let it bother you that it is a Best Western, it is basically an old traditional Swiss hotel.

Go to your local book store's travel section and find the Karen Brown book on Switzerland Inns and Itineraries. We have used her books in many countries and price ranges and found the advice to be very good. You will see good descriptions and be able to pick what you want. We used her again for an upcoming England trip and the brochure on the place we found looks great, as usual. Karen also has a web site.

Hotel du Dragon, a stone's throw from Petite France area. Nice rooms and facilities, helpful staff. We could park our car right there. Quiet location.

In Salzburg we stayed at a small hotel in old town, near Mozart's first house called the Elefant. It had an excellent breakfast, moderate price for Switzerland, very clean with some cheaper rooms on the small side. It was within walking distance of everything and was on a quiet side street. It can be found in many guide books and probably on the web. It also has a good restaurant.
