Looking for cheap summer airfare to London

Hello,
We (family of four) are planning on a trip to London in August. I have searched in Expedia, travelocity, orbitz etc. I cant find anything below $800/pax. If I wait is there a possibility of getting cheaper fares? I saw the thread on aircanada - the fare does not seem to be available any longer.

Any suggestions, anybody?

Thanks

What city are you leaving from? Prices do seem to be pretty expensive now.

I'm having the same problem. I"m departing from Cleveland in late August going to London and the prices don't seem to be going down. I check everyday hoping to find a good deal but haven't had any luck yet!

CNBC had a segment on airfares to Europe this a.m. Apparently there aren't as many cheap airfares as the Europeans are taking advantage of the dollar vs euro to come visit U.S. So the planes are full.

I was also told that the prices to Europe would not go down significantly because of the olympics. I just bit the dust and bougth at the high price.

Isn't it kind of early to buy tickets for August? I've always heard that 3 months in advance is the best time to buy a ticket...unless for some reason a good airfare comes up before. I've been checking, from San Francisco, and everything is around $900, I'll keep on looking!

Can you get one of the low fares to get to New York? I just got a $250 fare for JFK-Heathrow in June on Virgin Atlantic on priceline. With taxes and fees, the total was $361. I'm thrilled. I doubt you'd pay much over $200 to get to NY, so good luck.

Thanks for all replies. I am going to check out the Smarterliving package. lyb, I wanted to do it early so that I can make hotel reservations for London. I heard all the desirable ones get snapped up fast. I think I will wait another month before I go the priceline route though.

I had the same difficulty with tickets to Paris and found better fares on the United and Air France websites. We heard that flights to Europe were set to go up during the summer - I don't know if that is the case or not.

Today's USAToday had an article that basically said there will not be cheap fares this summer. Don't know if they are right, but it does sound like it will be harder.

Jand,

>>lyb, I wanted to do it early so that I can make hotel reservations for London. I heard all the desirable ones get snapped up fast<<

I understand what you mean. My reasoning with waiting apx 3 months before departure is the result of a conversation I had with a UA ticket agent. She mentioned that very often if you buy tickets too far in advance, it'll be more.

However, if you book a flight and then you see the same flight at a cheaper price, I found out that UA will actually issue either a refund, minus some fees or will give you a voucher for future airfare. 3 years ago, I had booked a flight to Hawaii and about 3 weeks after I booked the flight, it dropped apx $150. I called UA to ask if I could have my ticket re-issued. That's when they told me about the 2 options. I took the voucher, since I then got the full value and used it for future trips, I had a year to use the voucher.

Try Gotoday.com. They usually have great fares.

Also, we got a fantastic fare to Nice today on France.com. The airfare finder is on the right side of the screen near the top and is a little hard to find, but the results are great. It isn't just fares to France. They pretty much cover Europe.

Good luck and keep shopping!

The air fare is only the beginning - prices in the UK are stunning, 'tho the GBP has weakened a fraction in the last few days.
The seats are not really terribly full so you may want to hold off until the last minute if you have refundable on ground arrangements.

SalB - What did you pay? From where? What dates?

We're trying to find good fares and are very flexible in our travel dates.

Thanks!
