Long-stay winter vacations

We've spent the last four winters in the Algarve(Portugal) and are looking for a change. Anyone out there have any suggestions for a different winter vacation place- must have reasonably good weather!

The Canary Islands (especially Tenerife and Gran Canaria) are specialized in long-stay winter vacations. In the tourist centres there are lots of appartments to rent and you will find everything you need to survive comfortably (supermarkets, restaurants, etc.), including nice weather (warmer than the Algarve).

Look at the Majorca, Minorca islands which both cater to longer term winter vactions, avoid the lagerlout resorts and find beautiful resorts.

I'd choose Amalfi, Sorrento or the island of Malta. All are historical, have a lively local population, cultural goings-on, and are relatively warm (well, bot cold). And all these places love to celebrate throughout the winter.

From Malta, it's easy to ferry to Tunisia or Sicily for fascinating sidetrips. And Amalfi is on Europe's most gorgeous coast; Sorrento, near that coast, and Rome. You can't miss with any.
