London/Park Lane Hotel quick report (7/10)

Hello:

I just got back from a 2 week trip to UK, Denmark, Germany and Italy and I wanted to pass along some info.

1) Heathrow transportation: I booked a minicab to take us into the city ( we arrived 9pm and I was worried the tube would take too long) This was a mistake. The driver was late, didn't know the way to the hotel, and drove like he was in a funeral procession.

I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out the best way to get into the city, car vs. HR express vs HR connect etc. In the end we should have just used the tube - 4.80 per person, takes about 45 minutes. Hotel location is obviously going to influence your decision here.

2) Park Lane Hotel: We were able to stay here using Starwood points. I saw someone had asked in a post if it's really a 5-star hotel, it's not. The location (and the lounge) are 5-star, our room was more like 3 and a half star. About 20 minutes walk to Covent Garden.

If you take the tube from Heathrow, Green Park tube station is about an eight minute walk to the lobby.

3) We flew out of Standsted on Ryannair and it wasn't as bad as we expected. Just make sure you follow all the online instructions (they make their money by not cutting you any slack) . If you have ever shopped in a Moroccan souk you'll have no problem. Non EU passport holders - make sure you get in the right queue, it saves you a lot of time as it's way shorter than the others.

Hope this helps. I will post more under a different heading.

Hi pangloss, I recently stayed in the same area. High rent neighborhood, but still a trek to the center of the action around Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden. Enjoyed the ambiance of Holmes's "Park Lane Mystery" and the glamor of "My Fair Lady's" Mayfair neighborhood.

Who did you book? I (seriously) cannot imagine a reputable car service not knowing the Park Lane Hotel. It is extremely well known.

. . . I assume you meant the Sheraton Park Lane since you mentioned Starwood. Like I said - I can't imagine a car service not knowing it . . . .

We always stay at the Tavistock...not so fancy, but clean and within walking distance to most all the inner city sights: Covent garden, British museum, etc...london is a walking city.
