London: which area do you like best?

Hello! My wife and I are planning a trip to Europe, to include Paris and London. Do you have any suggestions for best area of London to stay in? <BR> <BR>Right now we are looking at a couple of hotels in Kensington and Mayfair, but we're not that familiar with London. I've tried to research it, but it's not obvious to me which would be most desirable area of the city to stay. <BR> <BR>What do you think is best area to stay? Appreciate your advice! <BR> <BR>David

Fodors <BR> <BR>With solittle time, I think you want a place that is central and on the District or Circle Line of the Underground. Kensington High Street and South Kensington fill the bill, but more central is the Strand. My year old notes read thus: <BR> <BR>http://www.travelinn.co.uk/find/search_frameset.jsp <BR>Travel Inn County Hall. £62.95 <BR> <BR>http://www.royaladelphi.co.uk/index.htm <BR>http://www.demon.co.uk/hotel-uk/adelphi.html# <BR>Royal Adelphi Hotel. From £45 or 80 inc breakfast <BR> <BR>http://london.hotelguide.net/data/h100241.htm <BR>Strand Palace Hotel. £159 to 199 <BR>Also at discount £57 any date in August <BR>and £66 Fridays to Sundays all year <BR>on http://www.hotelsengland.com./ <BR>Discounts also on http://www.travelnow.com/hotels/ <BR>and on http://www.180096HOTEL.com <BR> <BR>http://london.hotelguide.net/data/h100316.htm <BR>Charing Cross Thistle Hotel. £190 to 255 <BR> <BR>http://london.hotelguide.net/data/h100486.htm <BR>Waldorf Meridien. £210 to 495 <BR>Also at discount £165 any date in August <BR>and £176 Fridays to Saturdays all year <BR>on http://www.hotelsengland.com./ <BR> <BR>http://London.hotelguide.net/data/h100119.htm <BR>Savoy Hotel. £265 to 1190. <BR> <BR>The August offers of the Strand Place and the Waldorf might suit you. Please write if I can help further. Welcome to London. <BR> <BR>Ben Haines <BR> <BR>

The Mayfair area is very convenient to everything, if you can't walk to the the sights you can very easily catch a train or bus. You'll be close to Oxford St, Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus within walking distance is most cases.

I think Mayfair is your best bet -- as pointed out earlier, very convenient to most "touristy" sites, but also a lovely area in and of itself with a lot of wandering to be done.

I love the Knightsbridge area--lots of small hotels in the Beaufort garden area--ie. the Claverly, the Beaufort-also 1/2 blk to Harrods and the tube

For that few days I would stay in Mayfair or Knightsbridge. Actually, anywhere within the Circle line is convenient to everywhere. But these two areas are very posh and are convenient because they are on the Piccadilly Line (Knightsbridge, Green Park) which crosses all the other lines plus goes to Covent Garden, Leicester Sq., Russell Sq., etc. Basically most of the places you will want to see.

We just got a very good rate at the Intercontinental Mayfair for September. Very centrally located off of Picadilly on a small side street so quiet. We've stayed there before.

We love Chiswick. We first found this area because a friend of ours has a penthouse there, but the last trip we <BR>his home was being renovated and we stayed in a lovely bed and breakfast. <BR>E-mail me if you want more info. <BR>Danella

Hello David-I just returned from London yesterday. Kensington area is great, but I wouldn't stay at The Beaufort. Try the Claverly, The Parke, or the The Kensington - they are on the same street at The Beaufort. The Beaufort, <BR>they must have had a change in management, it isn't at all as Fodor's <BR> describes in the book. We have been to europe several times and we have <BR>stayed in many nice places through out europe-this was the most disappointing stay of all of our europeon travels. The hotel itself is very nice, but the staff needs some major training.

Definitely Mayfair. Upscale central location, walking distance to many tourist sites. Easy tube access and less travel time on tube due to central location. Lots of 4 and 5 star hotels.

Just returned from 5 days in London. We stayed outside the city...zone 4. Even at that, the subway ride was only 20 minutes. <BR>I was so impressed with the subway system and the convenience it provided in getting from one tourist spot to the next. <BR>You really can't go wrong if you plan to take advantage of an "all day ride" ticket on the Underground. <BR>Enjoy!

Mayfair is definitely the most central to tourist sites and the most upscale, but no one has mentioned that it is, consequently, unafforable to some. Therefore, I like Knightsbridge or Kensington.
