London Underground System
Trying to determine how best to handle the baggage question while in london . Have several hrs we would like to use seeing the city . Arriving gatewick - leaving heathrow.
Is it practical to take one full size piece of luggage per person and a back pack onboard the underground ? Have the same issue on return through london with a night spent in town. Can luggage be handled on the subway or better off some other way ?

Alan,

Depends on the time of day you are arriving. Sometimes the tube can get quite crowded, standing room only. But during the non-peak hours that should be fine. I carried a huge backpack with me when I was there and I always just put it between my legs when I sat on a chair or off to the side if I was standing.

BUT I suggest getting a locker at Heathrow and then hopping on the tube, you'll enjoy it more plus it just a few pounds for the day to store your back at the airport. Plus you won't have to lug your stuff everywhere you go.........

I did this one time when I was in London.

CHEERS!!!!!!! CIAO!!!!!!!!!!!

-LUCA

It can be done, but it is awkward. The last time we were in London, we took the tube with our luggage to our hotel. It was not at rush hour and we were not on a schedule and it went fine. When we were returning to Vicoria from Lancaster Gate to start home, it was trickier. We needed to be there by a certain time to get the Gatwick Express and meet our flight at Gatwick. There were six of us. It was early morning on a Friday-rush hour. We decided to send the luggage ahead with the guys in a cab. The rest of us took the tube to meet them there to try to save a few bucks. About half way into our ride, the tube just stopped as it sometimes does. We were sweating bullets, because we knew that it could be a long delay. They were waiting, our train was waiting, our plane was waiting ! Luckily, after about 15 minutes, we were on our way again. We met our husbands and everything fell into place. Just take a look at your time and leave plenty, and if it is not rush hour, it is certainly doable. You will see lots of luggage on the tube.

I don't guarantee this response ut vis a vis the reply two before me, I don't htink you can get lockers at heathrow because of security implications.

I would suggest dumping your luggage. Go to the most convenient main line station ( they all connect with the underground) and leave your luggage in a left luggage locker there, and collect it again on your way back.

I hate traipsing round London carrying stuff, and think it can lead to a hellish day instead of a great one
