Anyone done any trips to Bath and Stonehenge together? With who or on your own? We are a family of four headed over to London in two weeks and want to get out there. unsure if we should do a tour or can we get there by train.

We did about 3 years ago - I wish I could remember which tour company we used, because I wasn't thrilled with them. I'll have to dig around and see if I can find it.

Doing it on your own will obviously allow you to move at your own pace. We didn't have very much time in Bath and could have spent many, many hours there - and a bit less at Stonehenge.

there are several companies that do a Stonehenge/Bath (or more crazy, Windsor/Stonehenge/Bath) day tour.

For 4 that would be awfully expensive - but I certainly don't know your budget.

How long in London? The "best" way would be to rent a car and stay over one night in either Bath or Salisbury. Then you'd be able to see Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, Avebury, and Bath. (even adding the cost of 1 night's B&B, that would be cheaper than most of the group tours)

But if you don't have enough time to stay over - it is easier totake a tour . . . .

I agree with the car rental idea. Rent out of Heathrow, then you are on your way already.

Take an early morning train to Heathrow, get the car and head west. You should consider doing Avebury first, then Stonehenge. Now, if you time it right and can get the special tour, you can do an Inner Circle tour at Stonehenge after it closes. The info is on the Stonehenge site. It isn't very expensive, but it is very exclusive.

Spend the night near Stonehenge, maybe a cool B&B in Devinzes. From there it is an easy drive to Bath. Spend most of the day in Bath, but then if you have time, drop down to Wells for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

Drive back to London, arriving early evening at Heathrow. Train back and you have had a fantastic 2 days. You'll see much more than on a tour and it'll cost a lot less.

If you can do two days look at London Walks website. I have taken both the Bath and the Stonehenge trips. You go by train, excellent, excellent guide and see and do more than you could possibly do on your own. Plus, you don't get lost and you don't need to drive on the wrong side.

A guided day tour from London will cost £75 - £80 per adult and about £70 for kids. The £140 difference would more than cover a car rental, petrol and entrance fees. Some examples - a family entry to Stonehenge is only £14.80 and to the Roman Baths a family ticket is £28.
