London - transport to Gatwick airport

Hello

I am wondering if it is possible to catch a 9 a.m. flight (international) from Gatwick aiport - i probably be staying somewhere near the Swiss Cottage tube station. I know i have to catch the Express at Victoria Station. What time does the tube starts in the morning..i am probably leaving on a Thursday or Friday morning. Thank you

" I know i have to catch the Express at Victoria Station"

No you don't.

On weekdays, there are round the clock trains to LGW from St Pancras and West Hampstead.

It's always cheaper to get the Southern train from Victoria than the absurdly overpriced Gatwick Express. It's sometimes argued the Express makes sense during rush hours - but absolutely not if you're going against the commuter flow (as will be the case for you).

Through the night, you'll probably find it easiest to get to Victoria by getting the N13 bus to Oxford Circus, then the C2.

You could also use a car service - www.justairports.com is the service we always use for early morning flights.

A car service would be far slower than the train to Gatwick - you would need to allow much more time

Here's the timetable:

A train from West Hampstead at 0554 (0602 at St Pancras) will get you to Gatwick for 0652. Or there's one half an hour before that.

Can you purchase the tickets on the train or do you need to buy them at a station?

At the station (the only exception is the Gatwick Express)

But you can get them any time -- you don't have to buy them that morning. Pop into a station any time while you're in London.

As an alternative, You could catch the 5.36am tube from Swiss Cottage arriving at London Bridge station at 5.55am (19mins) then catch the First Capital Connect train to Gatwick Airport station leaving London Bridge at 6.20am and arriving at 6.52am. There are earlier or later tubes and trains depending on how early your check-in time is. I travel on this route regularly and it is a very fast service taking only 32 minutes! I've attached a link to the First Capital Connect timetable for weekdays.

You would need to buy your ticket at London Bridge station but there are several machines if there is a queue at the ticket office and you have almost half an hour to get it.

If I am staying by the British Museum, wouldn't St. Pancras be a better bet to leave from?

Yes. Amanda was following up the original poster's enquiry.
