Dear Maryann, We went to Windsor (some years ago) by train from Waterloo. It is only about 25 miles. You can see the castle as soon as you get off the train. Easy to walk, can't miss it. As far as I remember we travelled back to London by a different route, ending at Paddington station, just for the variety. So I imagine you can go there from Paddington as well.
If you wanted to go to Hampton Court, which I recommend, your visitor travel card should cover it. Ours did.
Enjoy Windsor, I loved the Queen's Dollshouses.

Went to Winsor castle last jan..it was arranged by the hotel. Also can pick up info on tours to the castle in any tube stop. It was a very nice tour, not expensive, and lunch was included, plus the guide was very informative. Anyway, that is one option.

Waterloo is the right station, as is Paddington. Waterloo trains go to the station by the riverside, Paddington trains go further into the city, but it is really only a matter of a few minutes between the two. I am not sure you can go from one station and return to another as the train lines might be operated by differenct companies.
Incidentally, why have you a 6 Zone pass? Unless you are living in Zone 6, there is no need to get a Zone 6 pass. Best bet is to wait till you get here and get a pass that corresponds to your lodgings (usually Zone 1.) Search this site for more London Underground information. Also, it seems that buying passes here will work out cheaper, especially if you just buy Zones 1 and 2. A weekly Zone 1 and 2 pass for all buses, tubes, trains and light rail in those areas is about £18. Bring a photo of yourself.

Mary Ann
Simple, well it is if you live here !!!
Get a circle line underground train to Paddington (your ticket will be fine) you then need to get a Thames Train to Windsor (about 30 - 40 mins)
Try their web site for times etc
www.thamestrains.co.uk
all the best
The Greenline buses are another option. See www.greenline.co.uk/home.htm and look at their DAYS OUT. It was a pleasant and simple and worked very well.

Fodors

As Rosemary M says, you can go in an hour from Waterloo direct or from Paddington with a change at Slough. Mr Doran is right: these days you cannot go out one way and return another, I'm afraid. When you buy your day return ticket, which is cheaper after 0930, you should show your 6-zone pass, and ask to book just from edge of zone 6 to Windsor, two way.

To go in a tourist or Green Line bus is tedious, as you spend a while getting slowly out of central London, a place which happily has no expressways. A tourist bus is also expensive. There are guides who form up groups at the castle gate, if you want them.

I hate to speak ill of any man, but suspect that Mr Williams is a north Londoner. His ommission of the Waterloo route suggests this.

Ben Haines, South London
