London to Edinburgh
Is it possible to travel by train from London to Edinburgh and if so, what train would I take and how would I book this trip? Also does anyone know the cost and approximately how many miles this would be. Would rather travel by train than fly. Thanks for the input.

Hey Mary

About one train an hour goes from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh, taking between 4 and 5 hours to do so. Try the railtrack website (www.railtrack.com) which links to the British internal rail timetable. I don't know the costs, you could always ring Railtrack, they can quote you, the number's on the website.

Great Northern Railway (GNR) runs the train from London to Edinburgh. Leaves from Kings Cross Station several times each day. This is an easy way to go and takes half the drive time. Most take about 4 hours, but can take up to 5 depending on stops, so note this when you book. I don't have the number handy, but someone else will probably respond and give you that.

One tip: Book at least three weeks out to get the super apex fares which are at least half of what you'll pay if you walk up to the window at Kings Cross. When booking over the phone you can pick your car (smoking/non) and choose between seats that face a table or just regular seats (no difference in price). I take this route often, but can't remember the price right now, but it's very reasonable.

The train station in Edinburgh (Waverly) is right in the center of town on Princes Street (one block over from the Royal Mile.

I've also flown and it was inexpensive and took only about 1 hour, but you have to deal with getting to the airport from London and getting into Edinburgh from the airport. Also, the train ride is scenic and relaxing.

Enjoy Edinburgh--one of my very favorite cities!

www.qJump.com is Ok, but I prefer the original www.thetrainline.com
There is also a phone no. for international customers listed on this site, apparently.
Book early, be flexible and stick to your times and you could get a round-trip (called 'return' here) for about $80 US all in. Sometimes there are first-class bargains to be had for abot the same price, so get searching.
If you can, though, phone, as you will be better guided through all the fares.

www.gner.co.uk is the site for the operator of that route. Try both for the best prices.

Finally, try www.scotrail.co.uk for sleeper services. There are quite a few ultra-low priced tickets each month (approx. $30 US one-way). You save a night on hotel charges and get into the city at breakfast time. Same goes for the way back to London. N B If you decide to go up one way on the sleeper, be advised that one-way tickets on teh day train are not cheaply priced, and tend to be the same as a return ticket. So either day or night, but not a mix if you want to save $$.
