London theatre
My wife and I will be in lodon in early August. Searched and found many shows available that week. Not sure which are good. Can anyone recommend a play (rather than a musical) we should see? How about a theatre that was worth a visit? Thanks.

My husband and I were in London last week and saw Richard Dreyfoos and Marsha Mason in the Neal Simon 'The Prisoner od Second Avenue' at Theater Royal Haymarket. We enjoyed the small 275 year old theater. Here's how I got tickets. First call British Tourist Authority at (800)462-2748 for a great supply of maps and info. In it will be the LONDON PLANNER. It lists all the theaters and plays. Call directly for tickets and put them on you credit card. We picked ours up at the box office the day before the show. Worked perfectly. Many people attend after sightseeing while others were dress for evening. We didn't have time to go change but didn't feel out of place. Have fun.

Hi Rob,
We were in London in early May -had tried before we left to get tickets to Mamma Mia but to our disappointment, none were available. However, on the day we arrived we went to the theatre box office (Prince Edward Theatre)and were able to get tickets which had been returned - this happens frequently, so check the theatre box office when you arrive. Don't miss this show - especially if you are an ABBA fan - it is fantastic!
Good Luck - Susan

I just saw a great play in London. It was "Plenty" starring Cate Blanchett. It was very good, but a bit depressing. I enjoy plays that evoke emotion so I loved it. It has great reviews and I can see why. You could sense her anguish in her acting. Ms. Blanchett is a terrific actress!

I liked "Blood Brothers", if you didn't cry from it, you suppose to have stony-heart.
When you are in London, you can get the discount price from Box Office in Leicester Square, but not every show is available, half price plus 2.50GBP service charge, and cash only.

Saw "Art" as well and it was delightful and insightful. If it's still on, "Gross Indecencies, the Three Trials of Oscar Wilde" was excellent. Very timely themes about persecution that seem to transcend the ages and the arts. The theatres of London are all gems themselves.

Hi Rob -- my wife and I were in London late May first of June and saw a wonderfully funny play "The Entire Works of Shakespear - Abridged(sp)" by the Reduced Shakespear Company (the title may not be exact but the Company name is). It was one of the funniest plays we have ever seen. Laughed so hard we cried. I would highly recommend it (it may not have big stars or a famous writer but it is absolutly hilarious).

Whatever you pick have a great trip.

MJ

To be honest with you I haven't seen Blood Brothers but I have the record, IT'S AMAZING!! EXCELLENT MUSIC!! touchy, funny, sentimental, easy to swalow, what else do you need.
I heard very good things about ART besides winning the Tony award for best play in 1998.

hi. I go to london almost every year for
the theatre. I was there this year in
May which isnt the best time for drama.
Its mostly musicals until the fall. But
i did see Art when it first opened and
its an extremely fun clever play. Lots
of laughs.
this spring i saw plenty, a soso play
but worth it for ms. blanchetts perforamnce
and i saw copenhagen which is excellent
but very dense. you have to really
concentrate,its quite serious. Lastly
I saw private lives. I would recommend
seeing at least 1 play at the royal
national theatre. its this amazing
complex with 3 theaters, cafes, bookstores
right on the thames and the views
from their balcony are quite nice. plus
the plays are generally great. hope
this helps. and enjoy.
you can often get 1/2 price tix at the
leicester sq ticket booth the day of
the show but if i Really want to see
something I buy over the net on
whatsonstage.com. i got great seats
through them. joanne
