For the cost of seven tickets on the Heathrow Express plus the cost of two or three taxis to your hotel, you should easily be able to get a car service that will meet you and remove that transfer hassle at Paddington. I'd check the car services mentioned above. Some do have vans available for larger groups. Or two cars could still be cheaper than the Express, and certainly just as fast.

The Heathrow Express is currently running a up-to-four-adults-for-the-price-of-two special good until Sept. 30. For second class tickets you would pay 26 GBP for the first four in your group and another 26 GBP for the last three. Total: 52 GBP. (Seven individual tickets would cost 91 GBP.)
If you go with a car service, you could possibly get by with one minivan and one smaller vehicle rather than two minivans. justairports.co.uk gives a good discount if you pay cash rather than using a credit card.

Message: No car will comfortably seat seven adults. You're best taking the Heathrow Express, then a couple of taxis to your hotels.
The first part of this statement is defiitely true and I can't imagine who could ever suggest otherwise. But that doesn't logically lead to the conclusion of the second statement. Why is the Express plus two taxis through the worst of the traffic a better solution than two cars or a van all the way? Not to mention that it will probably cost more (yes, even with the sale price mentioned above), I can't see how it doesn't require more effort (changing from the express to the taxi line at Paddington in the line that always forms when the Express comes in) and will take just as long overall from the airport to your final destination. You can forget what I'm saying if your hotel happens to be adjacent to Paddington, but I doubt that it is.

Check out www.airporttransfers.biz. We have used them numerous times for pickups from cruise ships and airports. Last year they brought nine of us from Dover to London with lots of luggage - in one big van with a trailer for the suitcases. We used them 4 times this year - wonderful service. Nice to be picked up right at the ship/airport and have someone else carry the luggage.
