Jon, taxi would be about &pound;80 to &pound;90. You would need to negotiate the price, since London cabs are not obligated to operate their meters outside metro Lndon.

jon: Take the train from Liverpool Street tube station directly to Stansted.

Russ is right, there is a direct train, but from Liverpool Street mainline station (not tube). However, the mainline station is well sign-posted from the tube station.

The train from Liverpool Street is the only reasonable and quick way there - takes about 40 mins.

Well, if you can manage your luggage on escalators, stairs, and along walkways, then it should be fine, but otherwise take a taxi to Liverpool Street Station. The taxi will leave you on the same level that you will board the train (I'm almost sure!).

What about any hotels around Stansted? We are taking a late flight from Rome to London Stansted (yes, on Ryanair), and I think it might be better for us to spend first night near there.<BR>Pam

The last time I flew into Stansted (June 98 - - admittely a long time ago), we used Woods Car Rental, and they were located IN a nearby hotel that looked quite nice. I'm not sure that they are still located there - - I can't tell from their web site, but perhaps a telephone call to their Stansted location would help with this.<BR>

By all means take a cab. We had cruise size luggage and the escalators were not working for days. The stairs will give you a heart attack with large heavy luggage. We luckily checked it out the day before and ordered a taxi.

Sorry to confuse but TAXI TO LIVERPOOL STATION is what will be best. Enjoy

I know you know this, but it is Liverpool STREET Station - a taxi driver could get confused if you ask for Liverpool Station, and try to take you to a station that has trains for Liverpool. A hassle you can do without.
