London restaurants

Dear Fodorites,

I will be in London in April for two days and am looking for one or two good restaurants in the moderate range. Knowing that London is expensive, I imagine "moderate" is $100 or a bit more for two with wine.

Any suggestions? I would like French, Italian,Indian, or traditional British fare.
I am staying in the Belgravia section.

Thanks in advance.
Michele, when we were in London a year ago, (rented a flat on Bloomington Terr near the Belgravia area, we ate a couple of times at the Ebery Street Wine Bar, I think was its completename, on Ebery Street, natch, and we loved it; some of the best food we had in London, and the people were swell. Give it a try! ANd have a good trip!

The Ebury Wine Bar, 139 Ebury St, bills itself as offering "international" cuisine. They have a good steak there, but there are other offerings. I did think it was kind of smokey from the cooking. Phone 0171 730 5447. All credit cards. From what I recall it was dark and pubby in feel. Reservations recommended.
Hi Michele

I have been trying lots of excellent London restaurants recently, but taking advantage of their pre theatre dinner menus. Many restaurants do great deals if you are OK to reserve a table early and order by 6.30pm.

I have particularly enjoyed the Criterion, a Marco Pierre White restaurant in a building once part of the Criterion Theatre next door. It is just next to teh exit for Picadilly Circus tube station and the setting service and menu are fantastic.

Also very good are L'Escargot in Soho, Axis in Aldwych Street, Soho Soho, Bertorelli's (2 sites both good).

Also less formal but a lovely restaurant is Brown's just near Leicester Square which is very loosely french in feel but has a good range fo dishes from bangers and mash to mroe elaborate dishes...

Have fun

Can back up the suggestion of Ivy, on
had lunch there. A little expensive,
right in the middle of the theatre dist-
rict alot of interesting people and pro-
bably well known but we weren't up on
english celebres.
Another old standby in London, but cur-
prisly good is Rules. One, if not the,
oldest restuarants in London.
Will be in London in May and looking
forward to trying some new ones.
Have a great trip.

Bill
