London has literally thousands of restaurants. Which area will you being staying in and what is your 'eating budget'? We only go into central London to eat if we are at the theatre or birthdays and anniversaries etc. This is for two reasons, 1) central restaurants tend to be expensive and 2) there are many very good restaurants in the suburbs. Locally we expect to pay about $25 per person. In town, the better restaurants are $50 dollars upwards. My personal favourite is the Ivy which is off Shaftesbury Avenue in 'theatreland'.
Having said all of this, if you just want to eat there are many chain restaurants in the centre, the best chain for pizza for instance, is Pizza Express. There are many ethnic restaurants where you would expext to pay $25 per person.

One thought for you, most Londoners tend to eat at 8.30 p.m. or later so if you follow the US style of eating, you should not have problems getting in in most places at 6.30 / 7.00 p.m. Any other questions, try looking up 'London and restaurants' in your browser or e-mail me. Finally, there is an excellent magazine called Time Out Eating Guide. (there are other things to do in London apart from eating!)
Hi Wendy.
Without knowing your tastes and budget, it's hard to respond because there are so many thousands of London restaurants, from fast food to Michelin 3 stars.
Here are a few, in no particular order.
As mentioned before, the Ivy in the West End theatre district is wonderful. Joe
Allen's, also in the West End, serves pretty good simpler food like grills,
hamburgers, etc. It is reasonably priced, for London, at the equivalent of about $25-30 per person without wine.
My two favorite haute cuisine places are
La Tante Clair, in Chelsea, and
Chez Nico in Mayfair inside the Grosvenor House Hotel. I would say they average $150 per person, depending on the wine order.
There is a chain of Richoux tea shops that have pretty good food like
sandwiches, broiled or fried fish,
chicken, etc and good desserts. They
average about $25 pp depending on what you order.
I also very fond of a restaurant called Kensington Place. I guess I would call the food British and Continental. Can't recall the address but it is mentioned in several guidebooks, yet it's not "touristy".
Average price about $50-60 pp.

Hope this helps.
If you'd like something less expensive ($10-$15) but still with English flavor, we found a quaint place called "Bunch of Grapes". It's in the Knightsbridge area, a couple of blocks from Harrod's on the same street. They had fish & chips, smothered chicken, shepherd's pie, etc. Restaurant is upstairs, bar downstairs. Have a fun trip!!

We usually ended up eating in pubs, and they were for the most part excellent. One in particular was the Anchor in Southwark, very near the Globe Theater. The upstairs diningroom was elegant, great view of the river and St. Paul's, the waiter was a trip! Dinner was probably about 15 pounds with drink and dessert. Then off to the Globe for the 7:30 show!
