London Pies

Somewhere on this forum I remember someone mentioning London pies to die for. A shop in Camden I think, but maybe not. I should have noted it down at the time, but it was before my London trip (in Aug) looked like becoming a reality.

Can anyone tell me where the great English pie shops are? Thanks...

Pies are a Northern thing and we make the best - Wigan is the Mecca. Greenhalghs Potato & Meat is king.

The Cornish do their pasty - beware of very poor fake Cornsih parties. The best we came across were in Falmouth. The lamb ones were a meal in themselves.

Melton Mowbray has its pork pies - again beware of regional fakes.

If you're thinking of East End-style "pie and mash", there's Manze's

There's a list here, which includes Clark's in Exmouth Market near Angel, which seems to be well spoken of, and Albert's in Camden:

I've done a quick search and turned up this from a post by the much-missed Ben Haines - is this what you were thinking of?

"The Lock Tavern
Slightly nervous of the “gastro-pub” name tag, the good people at the Lock in Camden would prefer to hear it described as “a pub that serves really good food”. Relax into a leather chair or sofa and enjoy one of their legendary pies supplied by the Square Pie Company. DJs play at the Lock Tavern Thursday through to Saturday nights and all day Sunday, with mixed sets described by the Lock itself as “generally not playing house music”.

Square Pie has a number of its own shops as well:

I wouldn't cross the road to go to the lock tavern, never mind traipse up to Camden for the experience.

It's full of Nathan Barley types -especially now the Hawley Arms has burned down and is really for the youngsters.

You will get great pies at Borough Market (to heat up yourself). I had a sausage roll there a few weeks ago that has ruined all other sausage rolls for me for ever.

Oh yes, Markrosy, I've sampled some of the northern ones. I have fond memories of a pork pie purchased in a bakery in Holmfirth when doing a "Last of the Summer Wine" pilgrimage there in 2003.

Thanks PatrickLondon for the websites - you've sent me off on a "good pubs" tangent may lead to good food (including pie) results as well! Would more could one ask?

The Guinea Pub has won awards for its steak & kidney pies - plus it's a lovely place for a pint.
