London: New Year's Eve
We'll be in London the last days of December and we'd like to know where can we pass the New Year's Eve. We don't know which is the usual in London for this time.
Any information will be of great help for us.
Thanks a lot.
Ismael

Ismael,
Most people go to pubs/restaurants etc. Most hotels have functions on New Year's Eve but you will probably need to book those. The only tradition that many people follow is to be at Trafalgar Square at midnight. There's a fantastic carnival atmosphere and you can hear the new year rung in by the chimes of Big Ben.

I was last there over Xmas and NYear's about l5 years ago. I doubt if much haschanged. Everything is closed on Xmas, Boxing Day and NYear's. No trains.
Nonewspapers. No nothing. You can however get excellent hotel deals for that time period since the English stay at home or go to country places/hotels.

Of course, if you have good company, it doesn't matter anyway.

Hope the weather is good.

Have fun.
Hello

It will be quieter than usual in London, but there will still be places open. Only on Christmas Day will 100% of things be closed. Museums and galleries are likely to be closed from Christmas Day to Boxing Day, but check with the Tourist Information offices or look up the specific sites on the web.
There is no transport on Xmas and N Y Day, and taxis will be scarce and very expensive as they charge double on these days.
You could try to go to a concert or a church service on one of the days, and also be aware that a lot of the shops here have had bad times recently so there will be BIG sales after Christmas. Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, Debenham's etc. will all have bargains.
New Year's Eve could be spent in Trafalgar Square, but it will be very crowded. Tens of thousands of people go there and there is a special atmospshere, but most people I know would not go there! Perhaps we should? Anyway, just remember that it will be very busy and that a lot of people will have been drinking alcohol.
I think Nigel was being very polite about Trafalgar Square on New Year's Eve! If you enjoy being crushed together with a load of 14 year olds who are drunk on half a can of lager and are just about to throw up all over you, then go!

Maybe I'm just getting old......
