@RM67 - do you have fans? My big mistake when I was in London for the 2006 heatwave and had a window that barely opened was not going down the street and buying a table fan. Even with AC I run my ceiling fan (living room) and table fan (study) a lot.

My friends said the thunder storm last night was very scary and loud for them. They are sweltering and the dogs have their tongues hanging out.

Thursdaysd - I don't have a fan because I'm usually out during the day and I worry the noise would keep me awake at night. Also heatwaves are pretty rare here. I do like the old style chrome ones though - I remember an antiques centre in Chiswick (The Old Cinema?) that used to restore those and I did hanker a bit for one of them. We are forcast storms again tomorrow (I love a good thunderstorm!) so I will make do with ice cream and iced coffee till then

RM67 - I was thinking of something like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Speed-Oscill...ords=table+fan

Given a choice of being kept awake by the heat or the noise I might go for the noise, although my ancient table fan isn't that bad.

RM - it's still lovely here in Cornwall, if that's any help.

If you can't manage to get away for a few days, have you seen these:

That looks like some sort of stargate or sci fi portal Ann! I have decided to stop whinging as rain is forcast for tomorrow and until then the tropical heat is a good excuse for unlimited boozes.

It is sweltering in Norfolk, humid, no breeze. A fan is going full blast, moving the hot air around like being under a hairdryer. And a live band has just struck up 2 gardens down, so we've had to close the windows. Hopefully this will be like a couple of years ago - get all of summer over and done with in a couple of weeks, then back to cool. Still, at least I'm not running round a tennis court.

I think they should be allowed ice cream breaks in the tennis and also have those water spray shower thingies like they do for race horses.

what is your hot weather tipple of choice, RM? I like a kir, or Pimms, or for a non-alcoholic drink, elderflower cordial topped up with fizzy water. Boris definitely looks as if he could do with one of those.

BTW, did you see Geoffrey Boycott chatting up that young girl next to him? He looked as if he was having a lot of fun.

We had great elderflower cordial in the Czech Republic Ann. One of the pensions we stayed at made their own from flowers picked in the gardens. When you ordered it you got a whole jug all to yourself with mint and ice in and straws in the jug to encourage you to drink straight from it.

I am a fan of Pimms too, though one of my favourite hot weather drinks is a proper home made cloudy lemonade. On the boozy front, mojito every time if it's it a bit roasty.

RM - I cheat and get it from Waitrose or Sainsbury's.

I'm not a mojito fan, though DH likes them.

When folks ask what weather they can expect in July I'll reply and say it can be cool, rainy, windy, drizzly, overcast, cloudy, hazy sunshine, brilliant blue skies with warm sunshine. Rain jacket and shorts worn in the space of 12 hours.

To cool off I made salted caramel ice cream, except the caramel didn't work out so it's really vanilla ice cream with salt - interesting - oh well at least it's cold.

She did have a rather fixed grin on her face, but the camera moved away from them pretty swiftly.

perhaps they thought that we're going to have more than enough of Geoffrey in the coming weeks!

lmao at salt ice cream

If you have never had a few salted peanuts in your ice cream sundae, or tried a Snickers ice cream bar, you don't know what you are missing.

I love salt caramel and salt in chocolate but I'm not sure salted vanilla is going to be the next big thing

One good thing about the heat wave: I hung my handwash out on the line and less than two hours later, one blouse is dry and the other is just barely damp.
