I like these negative words which have no +ve meaning eg:
[dis]combobulated
[dis]gruntled
[in]flammable doesn't really fit - they both seem to mean the same.
Anymore, anyone?

I just returned from London and thought it was as cold as Cholmondley. Ice everywhere. Do not recall it being that cold when I lived in the UK in the 70's although I do recall snow on occasion. I do remember feeding my room heater with 5 p coins and awakening in the morning to see my breath in the air.
Do not recall seeing anything about the Doctor and the cold in London last week. Did see Hamlet with the RSC friday night which was quite excellent.

So cold in London that they have started burning all those acid, sub prime debt notes that the yanks sold them last year - silly billies.
As I have to continually remind our Canadian friends - 65 below (or whatever) in Calgary is nothing compared to 2oC, wind and rain in Manchester. By 11am your feet have been wet 4 times and your are losing latent heat fast. There is no escaping that sort of cold in a polar bear skin coat!

-65C in Canada warmer than UK cold? I think not. I've lived in Glasgow and it is NO comparison to our cold (about 6 hours north of Calgary). Sure, it is a damp cold (and admittedly dampness is annoying) but our cold lasts for months and months and the UK has a few slightly chilly weeks. Totally different. Plus we are on the prairies with far more windy days than calm - it is rare to have a calm day here. It is nothing for winds to gust to 70 mph regularly.
Whenever I am in the UK in so-called winter I just need a light jacket - here you really have to bundle up, plug in your car, shovel the driveway about 40 or more times, etc. etc. It is very dangerous as skin can freeze in 90 seconds.
You can still grow veg in your "winter" - how cold can it possibly be???? Your grass is still green. We don't even see our veg or brown grass for six months of the year.
Your gardening zone is 8-9; ours is 1, the very worst. We can grow very few things that you can grow - we cannot even grow lavender, box hedges, oak trees, etc.
But as I mentioned above we are finally doing something about it and moving to Europe to escape this nastiness.
