We are planning a ten day trip to London in October and would welcome any recomendations for inexpensive to moderate priced lodging. We plan to make frequent use of the tube so proximity to a station would be a plus.

Also try londontown.com for discounted hotels--they are showing some real bargains, I think, for the virtually the same rates as the Travel Inn.

There are - Oh probably 400 modestly priced hotels near tube stations in London. If you do a search in this forum and in the Rants/Raves section you will find hundreds of posts about good places to stay.

There are a batch of moderate hotels along Cartwright Crescent in Bloomsbury which are convenient to the tube. They have a little more character (good and bad) than Travel Inn; maybe lots of stairs, maybe a good breakfast included, maybe tiny bathrooms, quieter ... Somehow the small hotels/ large B&Bs have become part of the London experience to us, even though in the states we tend to go for more mid-level lodging choices.

Montana Hotel is a popular and well-located moderate small hotel. It is on a busier street, but you shouldn't need to sleep with windows open in October.

Harrington Hall in South Kensington is close to the tube-- and has lots of restaurants around...and is in a super SAFE area..

Before you do anything, do a Priceline request for a 4 or 5 star hotel at the same prices of the "budget" hotels you are looking at. You may end up with a nice deal---we got a 4 star for LESS than it would have cost us to stay at the budget B&B's. October isn't as crazy as the summer, so you may be able to get a godd deal.
