Got the 5* Sofitel St. James for $225/nt via PL in June. According to biddingfortravel there have been a few 5* rooms at the Le Meridien Piccadilly closer to check in at around $180/nt. PL is the only way we do London for the best savings, 3 years running. I see countless people post where they stay at Thistles paying over $200/nt when people get the exact hotel, same dates on Priceline.

I agree with others that Priceline works well for the hotels that are on their roster - I have used it in North America and got really good rates and hotels in Miami, Toronto, etc. The hotel I wanted in London is, however, a 'boutique' and not available on Priceline.

You can also try luxurylink.com which has some boutique hotels, good results with them also

On a several-week trip across Europe I can't use priceline, we change our plans once in a while and I can't be locked into a non-changeable non-refundable priceline deal. Works for the last-minute stuff i suppose, but one unused room at $150 negates the savings along the way. And if I'd booked 5 priceline rooms all along the way and then had to cancel our trip altogether for some reason, I'd be really upset with myself!

It's true that if you don't use the rooms, Priceline could never be worth it.

If you have travel insurance, and you cancel a trip for reasons related to that, you should be covered (minus a deductible, which may still make it not worth it).

Alternatively, you could have backup hotels booked, and then switch to a Priceline booking at the last moment if it works out.
