London hotel choice
My husband and I will be traveling to London the first week of January. I have done a lot of research via the web, looking at different hotels. I have narrowed my search to Jury's Kensington, The Cranley Hotel and 5 Sumner Place. I would appreciate any information on these hotels, that would help me make a decision. Thank you

Hello Patty,

London hotels are a tough question. The problem is that the very nice hotels are very expensive and many of the moderate hotels are not very nice. I have stayed in London several times but still would not recommend a hotel to you. I do have a suggestion however. The Auto Club has a book of hotels and you can purchase a book of B&B's called The Best Bed & Breakfast for England, Scotland & Wales. I wish I had used it in London, but I have used it in the countryside and it is very accurate. Kensington is a very nice area to stay. I would also recommend that you pick up a book named Cheap Eats in London. This book has some of the great places that the tourists usually don't know about, and you will save the cost of the book in your first or second dinner.
Have fun.

Jerry

We were in London over Thanksgiving weekend and we stayed at the Travel Inn at County Hall. It is right at Waterloo Station, very centrally located and an absolute bargain when it comes to London hotels. It costs 55 Pounds a night no matter what room you get. The hotel is new and the rooms are big by London standards. We had a very enjoyable stay. The Travel Inn apparantly also has a hotel near Euston Station. My parents stayed there and they said it was just as nice but a little noisy.
We had a bad experience booking a room in London on the internet. We booked at the Melita House Hotel which seemed very nice. They do not tell you that the rooms are tiny and there is no elevator. We were also cold as the bedding was not sufficient. We were supposedly booked in one of the better rooms and they charged us 65 Pounds a night. On their site they say you are welcome if you come early before check in time and you can leave your luggage. We arrived at 11:00am (Check in was at noon) and got a very chilly reception. The only place to leave your luggage was in the front enterance where anyone could pick it up. All in all a highly unpleasant experience and we stayed only one night.

Hi Melanie!

We were also looking at the Travel Inn County Hall for our stay in London in April. Is there much in the way of shops and restaurants around that area?
Also, how easy is it to get across to the tube station?
Appreciate your information...

London hotels are very pricey and you don't get much help from the AA's Bed and Breakfast Guide. If you make the right choice, you are well satisfied. We stayed at the Kingsway, a AA 3-star "rated" hotel near Paddington Station last May and it was nothing but a dump. For a "continental " breakfast they served steamed bacon and microwaved tomato with coffe out of the 10-pound Nescafe jar. On previous trips we enjoyed our stay at the Pheonix, a small tourist hotel in Bayswater and the large Thistle Hotel at Victoria Station which has undergone a massive transformation in the last three years.
Good luck!
Patty,

I realize that you already have your hotel choices chosen, but you may want to look into the Rembrandt Hotel. Its a moderate hotel but very nice, and its in the Kensington area across the street from Harrods. There is quite a bit of info on the web about it. Just a suggestion...
