Use Priceline. I've gotten four star hotels for $60-70 U.S. Definately look at biddingfortravel.com before using Priceline.

If you don't mind going away from the center of the city, try Iolanthe, a Bed and breakfast in Hampstead Heath. Lovely place, right across from a meadow, you forget you are in London. A bus arrives every 15 minutes to take you to the tube (subway) station. A double ensuite, with breakfast, was under $100. Their website is www.buddel.de/mike.htm. Have fun!

We live just outside of London and go in for Saturday nights quite often and always use lastminute.com and have good luck. Decent 4 stars in Kensington (Copthorne Tara) Bloomsbury (Jury's and Thistle) and Covent Garden (Strand Palace) for no more than 100 bucks a night.

Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to answer. Unfortunately with the pressure of available time to do this, I did book before reading them. Found on the internet (Expedia) a hotel in South Kensington at $103US (about $165CAD), -the Quality Hotel South Kensington. From some of your remarks that seems like an OK district. But I will continue to research your suggestions.

Check out the Thistle Hotels website -- www.thistlehotels.com -- I made reservations for November at the Thistle Bloomsbury, including breakfast and taxes, the cost is 45 pounds per night. Other hotels in the Thistle chain also have 45 pounds per night pricing, some are even less.

Another vote for Priceline, we just got the 4* Copthorne Tara for $75 per night in the middle of July (probably could have gotten it for cheaper). The hotel was real close to the High Street Kensington tube stop and much better than the hotels I've had on previous trips for more money.

You can narrow it down on Priceline by district so you have a general idea where the hotel will be.

I agree with Leslie the Thistle hotels are very nice and pleasant staff. I recently came back from london a wk ago and stayed at the Thistle Kensington Gardens right across the street from Hyde Park and had a perfect stay. I will definetly be going back again. They have thistle hotels all over the london area.
