Mr.Haines:

"You will see London, my London, any colour, and language, any age."!!!

Thank you for walking your vibrant, beloved city with us. I have marked all the routes on my big London map.

Please post the list of immigrants from Julis Caesar.

Would it be asking too much if you could show us some places south of the River or any other part of the town?
the royal academy of art isn't too far from b'ham palace. can do it on foot - cross green pk and then turn right into picadilly; walk a little way past the ritz and you'll see it across the street.

cool shopping arcade just before the academy too.

This is for Lizzie: My first trip overseas I wanted to bring back a gift representative of each country for my tiny grandson. I searched all over London for "British-made" clothes and never found any. At Harrods, they carried mainly french. I asked about this and the sales girl told me the British make inferior clothes so Harrod's wouldn't carry it. I reminded her that Harrod's advertisement said you could find ANYTHING there. She kind of raised her chin and sniffed "not poorly-made clothes." Too funny! Before I hear from anyone in GB, I didn't believe her for a minute! I've bought many lovely things for myself in the years since then. As for toys, going to Hambley's (I know there's one in Piccadilly, on Regent Street, I believe) is akin to FAO Schwartz, so you'll find all the wonderful playthings you could want!

The strikes are for tube and underground only, and don't affect busses and taxis -- except that they are in higher demand. The strikes happen one day at a time, with a few days warning of each.

I'm sorry you'll be disturbed a little. The roots of the strike are indeed job protection in part, but centrally distress at the idea of putting the system into private hands, so that they can make the same kind of hash of it as they have of the railways.

Ben Haines, London

To "who the":
Personally, I greatly appreciate that Topper went to the trouble to find and top this thread. I, and I'm sure a great many other newer visitors to this board, had never seen Ben Haines' fantastic suggestions for London On Foot. Sure, someone could ask basically the same question again if they needed to, but do we really need to put Mr. Haines to the trouble of reposting his very in-depth answers?
I imagine there are others besides myself who have bookmarked this page for use in planning the next trip to London.
I do see your point about topped questions pushing other questions down, and I'm sorry it works that way for the real questions, but then, it also helps us get rid of the many many many troll posts we've seen lately.
I really don't think it hurts anyone to occasionally top a thread with really outstanding responses such as this one.
I would agree with you when it comes to topping troll posts or the ones where people are continuously attacking each other.
Have a lovely weekend.
