Hello Chocolate,
Firstly, in many "sit down" restaurants you certainly can order a couple of meals and share them with your son. Not in more elegant and upmarket restaurants, perhaps, but certainly in lower budget places which is what you're looking for.
And in ethnic restaurants you will certainly have no problem - I go to local Indian, Chinese, Thai etc. restaurants all the time with friends and if we're not feeling too hungry we'll often order just two mains between three of us. No problem at all.
Alternatively, many places have child menus which offer smaller portions at smaller prices.
For lunch, if you're willing to shop around a bit, have light meals such as sandwiches and perhaps a few supermarket lunches, I think you can get by on about £12-15 between the three of you. Won't be able to spend much on drinks though.
For dinner I'd say you can work on £25-30 between the three of you, again I'm talking about food and no drinks other than tap water.
It's not going to be a piece of cake - sometimes you will have to search around, particularly when you are right by tourist attractions, but it can certainly be done.

One of the places we enjoy eating is the West End Kitchen. It's on Panton Street which is between Haymarket Street and Leicester Square. We can eat there for abour 14 GBP including food and diet coke. They have "specials" which include an appetizer and main dish. We also enjoy eating at Garfunkels.
