London City Airport - early morning flight?

I am planning a 7:40 am flight out of London City Airport. We are arriving the evening before at Heathrow at 5:00 pm.

Where should we stay for the evening?

The first Docklands Light Railway of the day leaves Bank Street at 5:27 am, with an estimated 24 minutes travel time, arriving at London City Airport at 5:51 am. For a 7:40 am flight, would this be enough time? Or, would a taxi be better?

Is there somewhere to stay near London City Airport? The web site doesn't suggest any hotels nearby.

Thanks for your help.

That is probably early enough for London City. But this might be a situation where staying in one of the business hotels at Canary Wharf makes some sense. You could take a cab to the airport. Or maybe some else will have a better suggestion.

This site lists hotels at/near Canary Wharf

London City always used to pride itself on very short check-in times. I can't find any information on their website, so I'd suggest checking with the airline; but on past experience, 6am for a 7.40 departure should be more than enough time.

The obvious hotels for access to the DLR would be the Marriott at West India Quay (I'd suggest walking from there to Poplar station for the DLR line to the airport), or the Ibis by Blackwall station, or the Travelodge by East India station. That's in (subjective) descending order of attractiveness of surrounding facilities for the evening; and ascending order of proximity to the airport.

There is also a Travelodge right by the airport, but once you're there, you'd be taking the DLR into Canary Wharf for the evening (only 10-15 minutes), or just watching TV in your room.

Arriving at LCY for an 0740 flight at 0551 is downright potty.

Even if you've got luggage to check in, desk checkin STILL closes 10 minutes before takeoff. However much you like to be on the safe side, getting there any earlier than 0700 is a waste of your time.

And that means you can get a tube from anywhere in central London leaving about 0600-0615. Which in turn means you can stay somewhere civilised, rather than the office-only wastelands around Canary Wharf and Docklands.

The whole point of LCY is that we can get up at a sensible time in a tolerable part of town and saunter out at our convenience. Don't waste this unique treasure by treating it like a conventional airport.

But check with the airline first, just to be sure.
