London, Bath, Highclere Castle?

London, Bath, Highclere Castle?
I will be in London for a week and trying to setup an itinerary. Will be there from a Sunday to Sunday in early September. My wife got tickets to Highclere Castle for a Thursday afternoon tour. We also would like to see Bath and maybe Avebury. My question is would it be better to stay in London the whole time and day trip out to Highclere castle and Bath? Would these require two separate trips? Or should we plan on staying a few days outside of London - possibly in Bath or Swindon? Is it better to take some sort of Downton Abbey tour? Right now we just have the castle tickets and were planning to take the train out there. Thanks!
