One of the reasons the OP wants to visit York is a desire to visit York Minister. No comparisons to equal the minister in Bath. I agree Bath is very nice, but I don’t think it’s what OP is looking for.

If train fares are so high OP may want to look into Days Out of London railpass which gives a retrun trip on Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted express trains and your choice of number of days over a longer period (flexipass) - don't think it quite goes to York but close and a cheap supplemental ticket would be needed. Valid for Dover and all of southeast England and as far west as Bath and Bristol. Nice thing is you can hop any train anytime and on day trips this is nice as you can leave London early (discounted tickets often have black out times until 9-9:30 I think) and return when you are ready - no need to plug yourself in advance to a certain train. Could easily hit Canterbury back from Dover - don't have to determine routing. Not as cheap as discounted tickets but if wanting full flexibility to hop any train anytime could be good - just mentioned as a possibility and for others planning longish day trips out of London.
