We loved our stay at Le Domaine des Haut de Loire in Onzain. We travleed to Amboise and Blois and Azay la Rideau and many other chateauxs without any troubls
. It has a wonderful restaurant on site so you can relax and enjoy your dinner with wine and no problems getting home!!

Response to question by ALICED above: We are taking the Viking River cruise that starts in Bordeaux and ends in Bordeaux. Should be fun. Go to their web site and they will have the full itinerary. Traveldawg.

Angers is a fine fine city but like annhig says it is too far out of the main area of tourist interest in the Loire Valley - too long a commute to the most famous chateaus - Chenonceaux, Azay-le-Rideau and Chambord - Amboise is a perfect base location wise.

Onzain where Avalon2 stayed is a - for the Loire - quiet backwater - an ordinary town little touched by the tourist rush but just a few miles from Amboise also in a great location.

how many more do you want?

plenty of ideas up thread - from larger towns like Saumur, Amboise and Chinon to smaller villages and even chateaux.

it's a fairly small area - most anywhere will be lovely.

Just returned from trip and spent several nights in Amboise. Loved it. We stayed at Les Fleurons a wonderful B&B with great location. Highly recommend it.
