Lodgings in London

I'm looking for advice on an inexpensive B&B in London (less than $100/night). Does anyone know of a place? Does anyone know of a website to find more info?

Caryn, <BR>Take a look at www.kgp-publishing.com. It lists a number of b&Bs in London with amenities and consts and contact numbers. <BR>

We found Martine through the British Tourist Authority Stay in Homes program. Her townhouse is in Swiss Village in a quiet neighborhood (good pub at the end of the street) with beautiful rooms, private baths, incredible breakfasts. Email if you'd like her info; also, check www.lfcbb.co.uk for additional listings.

I tried the address suggest by Wes Fowler but it won't connect. I've already found the second address suggested by Elvira (I've been on the web for a couple of hours). The problem is, of course, how do you know which ones are good? I've stayed in some really horrible places. I'm not looking for anything fancy. Just my own private bathroom, clean, near a tube station, hopefully in a lively neighborhood.

Hi Caryn, Try the Central London Apartments, Bloomsbury, believe it was about $80/night/US. Five minutes to British Museum, five minutes to tube station. Microwave, refrigerator, private bath, "kitchen" sink. They have a website, we booked in advance before leaving US. A great experience. A couple of nice pubs in easy walking distance. <BR>

Caryn, <BR> <BR>You did not say what area of London you preferred, but here is a short list of inexpensive B&B's to consider in your search: <BR> <BR>Swiss House Hotel or Hotel 197 -- both in S. Kensington, located on Old Brompton Road (plenty of shops & late night restaurants). Swiss House offers a current rate of 59 pounds/night for single with private bath (this includes continental breakfast & VAT -- 5 pounds extra for English breakfast). Haven't stayed at either one, but the next time I'm travelling solo to London, I plan to stay at Swiss House -- it was cheerful, inviting, clean, very reasonable and in a great neighboorhood. (I checked it out on my latest visit to London over New Year's, as it was nearby to our hotel.) <BR> <BR>Aster House or Five Sumner Place -- also in S. Kensington, close to the tube, just off of Old Brompton Road. I have stayed in both of these properties, and think both of them are good values, but they are a little over your stated budget. <BR> <BR>I happen to prefer the S. Kensington area, so that is my only personal experience with B&B's, but here are two more suggestions that are within your budget: <BR> <BR>Woodville House -- near Buckingham Palace in Belgravia; a small Georgian guesthouse, includes full English breakfast. <BR> <BR>The Harlingford -- in Bloomsbury, up near the New British Library, also a Georgian home. <BR> <BR>If you need more information, please feel free to e-mail me directly or post again on this thread. (To avoid an overly long response, I did not include hotel info (address, phone numbers, descriptions, etc.), but if you need more detail or contact info, I will be happy to provide that information to you.) Hope this is helpful -- Cynthia

We, too, are going to London and hoping to find adequate rooms for $100 or so a night. We had reserved at Eccleston & the only response was "NO!!" Thanks to all your respondents--perhaps we will find decent, reasonable lodging!! <BR>

Stayed at the London Elizabeth hotel in South Kensington area...right across from Hyde Park. (addressancaster Terrace, Hyde Park, London W2 3PF; telephone: 071-402-6641; fax: 071-224-8900)It is small but very nice, friendly and a great area. The staff is very helpful. Very safe. My friend and I missed the last tube after an evening dinner cruise on the Thames...(I highly recommend the Bateaux London dinner cruise. More expensive but well worth it!)...and walked to the hotel. This American was a little jumpy...(two ladies alone on the streets of London at midnight)...but no problem. A bobby looked at me like I was crazy for asking if it was safe. "Perfectly safe, madam!" Very different from America! Go over for an early morning walk in the mist in Hyde Park...one of the entrances is right across from the hotel. Seeing the Peter Pan statue alone in the quiet of the morning was really wonderful. Have tea in the Orangery of Kensigton Palace...scones and clotted cream...mmmm! Ahh...London!

As a further general posting on inexpensive B&B's in London, I have received many e-mails requesting more detailed information on the South Kensington B&B's that I listed above, so thought I would include additional reference information that may be helpful to others: <BR> <BR>"London for Less -- Live like a Queen for Fewer Quid: Ten Hotels for Less than 130 Pounds", Conde Nast Traveler, August 1998 <BR> <BR>"London Hotels of Character, Distinction & Charm" by Nina Prommer and Rosalyn Singer (Prion Guide). This is a hard-cover book that lists about eight B&B's/hotels for each neighborhood. A definite plus is that they range from budget to luxurious, and include a 2-page write-up and great colors photos on each property. (Published in the U.K. -- I purchased this book at the Museum of London) <BR> <BR>Fodor's London and Eyewitness London are also extremely helpful in choosing a B&B/hotel that satisfies your budget and personal preferences.
