Location to stay in Garmisch-Partenkirchen area

Please recommend location (town) to stay in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area. I just spent couple of hours searching internet for the info, but there are so many conflicting opinions! We are two couples – no kids, will have a rental car and planning to stay for 5 nights in this area, probably rent a house/apartment. What town would you recommend to stay in? We’d like to drive around, see couple of castles, enjoy scenery, go for 2-3 hour hikes, etc. At night we’d like to go out and have at least some selection of restaurants.

Garmisch is great. plenty to do and places to eat, easy public transportation with the train if you don't want to drive.

This is a good area and two bedrooms.

Live like a German is a rental agency but have never had much success dealing with them.

More Bavarian looking and love the balcony, good location. I am trying to find this one we wanted to rent but was booked. It was great. Above a store.

Swandav, there was the best place above the Gerry Weber store. Do you know who rents those?

The first link, this is the same apartment but tow others also. One with three bedrooms.

Thank you flpab for the links. So, we will stay in Garmish-Partenkirchen then. Another question, please: are there any areas in town more preferable (or to be avoided) when choosing an apartment to stay (in summer time)? Again, we'll be driving, so don't care too much about public transportation.

Not really, swandav lives there so she is the expert but I have never seen a bad area. I just like it downtown where you are close to everything if out for dinner and drinking. Nice shopping mall in that area though you would never know it from the street, bakeries, cafes and markets. Partenkirchen is also very nice but much quieter. It still has part of what was the Roman road.

There is a large American presence in Garmsich and many speak english.
