Lisbon to Porto, train or car? How many days? Which towns to see?

Hello! We are planning a 5 week trip to Europe, part of which we'd like to return to Lisbon because we really loved it so much the first time we visited in 2010. I'd like to spend about 5 nights in Lisbon to see some of the sites we missed last time and enjoy the city. Then we'd like to travel to Porto. We will have a 4 year old with us, considering this would it be better to take a train and make stops in interesting towns along the way or would renting a car be a better fit? How many days should we budget with stops along the way? What are the top 3 towns between Lisbon and Porto not to be missed? Is it better to return to Lisbon to fly out or can we just as easily fly out of Porto (we'd likely be going to Rome or Paris from Portugal). Thank you for the advice!!!

Be sure to check if a rental car will have a car seat. Not all of them do. Every town along the way will have some places of interest and you never know what you might stumble across. Play it by ear!~

Thank you, that sounds great! How are the roads/highways there? Pretty clear signage? I will find out about the rental car having a seat, I know you can rent one with the car in the states but not sure about Portugal! THose photos look amazing!!!

I'd imagine that car seats are available from rental companies, as Portugal has clear laws about driving with children (also, for example, kids have to be 12 to ride in the front seat). Of course, best to check with the particular company for availability on your date.

Last time I flew from Rome it was into Porto, plenty of flights.

Car seats for children (of all ages) are required and available when booking your rental. Who knows who you're booking through, but both AE and Kemwel have the notices on their websites, as does EuropCar.

A little more information on the number of days you have would be helpful.

Thanks for the car seat info, haven't selected a company yet but i will look at those websites. As far as number of day we plan to spend 5 nights in Lisbon. As far as the journey from Lisbon to Porto that's up in the air. We have 35 days total in Europe but plan to spend at least 10 days in Rome and some time in Paris. So basically looking for a suggested amount of days to make it from Lisbon to Porto at a leisurely pace, including days for stops in between. Once we reach Porto I'd like to stay a week. It's mainly the stops in between the 2 towns that I need advice to determine how many days we need.
