Hello, me again. I am now abandoning the idea of Greece and considering flying into Naples. Is there a direct train from Naples to Bari to visit Puglia or anywhere easy to get to? I would pick up a car there. TIA

Hello,

Unfortunately there is no direct train from Napoli(Naples) to Bari. You need to take a train from Napoli Centrale(Naples central railway station) to Caserta and board a Rome-Bari train there or take a direct train from Naples to Taranto(also in Puglia) and take another train to Bari.

By the way, this is a question you could easily figure out by yourself(and indeed any rail trip pretty much anywhere in Europe with a few exceptions like Russia and Greece) via the German Railways site: www.bahn.com

Thanks for the resources. I admit to being a bit lazy.

It's your trip; you will likely get as much or as little from it as you are willing to put into it.

Why don't you rent a car already in Naples?

By the way, the public transport is excellent in Puglia and you can see lots of places easily by train or bus. I spent 4 days in Puglia based in Bari and Matera(OK, it's in Basilicata, but almost in Puglia), used only trains to get around(only bus from Andria to Castel del Monte) and saw the following places(OK, some of them only briefly, because I had short time): Alberobello, Castellana cave, Matera, Andria, Castel del Monte, Barletta, Canosa di Puglia, Trani.

In short I'd either do the whole trip by train/bus or rent a car for the whole trip already in Naples(I guess you'll be returning to Naples).

Well, there are a LOT of reasons why some people choose not to use a car, including (but not limited to) a concern about the environment.

And IMO, the OP's reasons aren't our business. JMO. ;-)

Agreed. I planned a road trip around Marche in 2017, so I'm aware of what's involved and am prepared to do what is necessary. At this stage, I'm just trying to reign all the possibilities into something malleable to work with .

" And IMO, the OP's reasons aren't our business."

That was only a rhetorical question.

Thanks everyone. Travelling by autostrada is tiresome, boring and EXPENSIVE, especially crossing from one coast to another. I prefer if possible to do a long haul by train (or possibly even fly) and then hire a car to do the back roads of the region, in this case Puglia. As stated previously, my goal is to drive up from Puglia to Gran Sasso (L'Aquila, Abruzzo). From Polignano a Mare, it would take 5 hours to drive to L'Aquila so I had asked for an interesting place about midway, eg Campobasso but I got no response to that. It was mentioned that there was a direct train from Foligno to Firenze so I thought I would drop the car off there and go to Firenze by train. This is the first leg of my month-long trip so I'm trying to figure out a "jumping-off" point.

There are of course direct buses from Naples to Bari. It's a 3 hrs journey. Fares start at 5 EUR/pax.

You got no response, because Campobasso is not a tourist destination. Chances are that no user of this forum has ever been there, you may be the first.

If it looks nice for a stopover(and it looks nice enough for me, lack of tourism is a plus) than just stop there, don't wait for others to endorse it.

I understand. That was just an example. There might have been areas, other routes, even the coastal road that someone might have recommended. Personally I don't think the Adriatic Coast is very interesting. The autostrada up to Pescara would be pretty direct but not necessarily scenic. I think it's better to cut across. I did look at Campobasso and I agree, I like the non-touristy places too. I just thought someone may have an idea of something worth seeing, as one poster did for the L'Aquila area.

I think there are plenty of users of this forum who are like-minded, but meanwhile I will just look a bit closer into the possible routes from PaM.

I do appreciate your input!
