Trying to plan an itinerary from Copenhagen to legoland in Aug. We are a family of four with 2 eight year olds, and plan to backpack. Anyone have any advice on what not to miss. Hopefully we will be there for a week. We are trying to do this all by train, ferry, and bus.

Getting to legoland using public transportation is tough. We ended up driving. You could find some things to do in Aarhus, like the Gammel By (old city). The kids would probably like that, there is a park just outside, and it is simple to reach using public transportation. Another idea is canoeing. You might search for some options. I canoed from Langaa, which is easy to reach by bus and train from Aarhus, but there may be other places you can get on the long river.

These activities are all on Jutland, I'm not too familiar with Sealand. You could stop in Odense for all the HC Andersen stuff.

Same experience here; it is tough.

I looked into several different ways to get there. We ended up flying directly into Billund one way and taking a train from Vejle to Copenhagen. We took a taxi from Billund to Vejle.

If I were to do this again, I would fly in and out of Billund.

There is not much in Billund except Legoland, and I would not recommend planning more than a day there. There is an HI Hostel right next to a campground there (or at least there was in 1998) where there are some activities for children (a moon bounce, pony rides, and ATV rides). The HI Hostel was wonderful. We had a room for 4 with an ensuite bath.

The hostel is no longer an HI hostel, but appears to be owned by Legoland ad is called Legoland village. There is now apparently a waterpark there also.

For a family of 4, you really should drive. It will be much, much, much easier and shouldn't be that much more expensive than any other option. I have several friends with family in Jutland, and they always drive.

Also, driving would let you explore more. Perhaps head up to Skagen for a taste of a Danish seaside resort.

Driving in Denmark is really quite easy, with well-maintained roads, polite drivers, and relatively light traffic. The only differences from driving elsewhere are that you actually are supposed to yield enough to enable folks to enter the freeway, and the left lane is actually used primarily for passing.

And Legoland is easily done in just a a day, two at most.
