legal layover question

Hi, I was reading on another thread about legal connections, that if it is not one the passenger is on their own for getting a flight back if the connection is missed. We just booked with miles on Continental from JFK to Greece next year with a 50 minute layover at CDG on the way home. I thought it might be close but didn't think too much about it as there are worse places to be stuck for the night but not if I have to contend with rebooking a flight myself. Has anyone had to deal with this situation? thanks.

Quark, if you booked all the way through via Continental and they're ticketing you (even if you change to another carrier) I would assume you're covered.

If you booked only the US/France leg via Continental, andthe France/Greece portion separately yourself, you do have a concern: miss your connection and you have ... missed it. And would need to re-book at your expense.

"Legal" or not, 50 minutes is definitely not enough to transfer from an ATH-CDG flight to a CDG-JFK flight, presumably on Air France. You'll need to change terminal, go through immigration and security.

If CO booked you that way with 50-minute connection to start with, it may be "legal", but expect to be put on the next flight out unless you're already on the last one. AF flies that route 6 times a day.

Hi Q,

From what I have gathered, 0:45 hr is a "legal" connection, whether it is possible or not.

If you are ticketed from A to C via B, it is the airline's responsibility to get you from A to C.

If you have a ticket from A to B and another from B to C, it is your problem if you miss the flight.

In your case, as noted, be prepared to miss your connection. CO will put you on the next available flight.

Don't let them make you sleep at the airport.

And this brings up my question. We booked my daughter's flights from MCO-FCO through United. Originally there was about a 2 hour layover in Munich. Lufthansa changed their Munich-Rome flight and now she only has 40 minutes. I called United and they said it would be fine.

My wonder is if she misses the flight and is put on the next flight, which arrives almost 3 hours later, is Lufthansa liable for the EU compensation regulation? I ask because I would have the car service waiting for her at FCO, but if she is bumped then we lose the $50 for the service.

Since I have already voiced my concern to United and they don't want to change, do you think they/Lufthansa is liable?

Oh, and this is for a Christmas flight, so United/Lufthansa has plenty of time to make a change without a problem on their end.

My feeling is if they want to be butts about it, then they should be liable for any hassles.

There are so many loopholes in the EU compensation scheme that it's very unlikely you'll get a compensation for a regular misconnect.

And they won't care if you're going to lose a $50 car service, or if you're missing the chance to claim a $1 million lottery.

I don't know what you're entitled to, Dave, but if I had only 40 minutes in ATlanta, for instance, I'd be worried! Even if arrival is right on time (granting they write arrival times later than necessary to make it possible to be OT), figure, what, 10 minutes to deplane and there's 30 minutes available to get to an as yet unknown gate. ''If someone at United told you they don't want to change you (or change to a later Lufthansa flight), call again and see what the next person tells you. Then call again. Then ask for a supervisor.

Quark-
I was offered a 50 minute legal connection through CDG on a flight from Rome to IAD in October. I declined and took a 4 hour layover just to be sure that I make the flight. In a connection from Budapest to Nashville two years ago we were on a similar legal connection, missed the flight because our Budapest flight was 20 minutes late and all other flights for the day were full. We ended up staying in a airport area hotel that had the feel of Kansas City rather than Paris. CDG is so far away from the city---you'd have to decide if you want to go into Paris and battle traffic on the return to the airport. Our room was provided by Air France so we stayed at CDG that night. We've done Paris before and this connection was at the end of a 15 day trip so we were not as anxious to try to squeeze anything more into our trip. Good luck!
