guy -- in case you are considering annhig's suggestion . . . Aberdeen airport to Portree is a 5.5 hour drive if you don't run into traffic in Inverness or construction anywhere.

Five hours from Edinburgh to say Portree in Skye is optimisitc at the very least. Again why not stay in Edinburgh and use Rabbies for day trips? They are an excellent tour company with a limit of 16 passengers and with very knowledgeable driver/guides. Their tours allow for a great deal of independence too. It's simply not the usual bus tour. They even have 2/3 day tours to Skye. Much easier and really a better plan than trying to drive in unfamiliar territory. As a frequent visitor to Scotland, I would also advise you to think outside int box in regards to having to visit Skye. There are plenty of other just as wonderful places. You may find it difficult to find accommodation on Skye at this late date. It's extremely popular and it books up early. Most people book 6 months in advance. If you go with Rabbies, they take care of accommodation for you.

That is a biggie.

AND - how would you feel IF you could find accommodations, and after an 11 or 12 hour travel day . . . it is raining sideways and you can't see a darned thing.

IF Skye is a 'must' (it shouldn't be on such a short visit IMO - but never mind) take historytraveler's suggestion of Rabbies. SOOOOOO much easier on everyone involved.

I know it’s a lot and I’m wary re weather. But we already booked a nice-looking B&B in Portree, so that die is cast. Planning to spend a night in E’borough before driving to Skye the next day. Two or three (hopefully not howling) nights there before wending back to E and then a few days there, then home.

>>train to E-borough<<

>>night in E’borough<<

It's Edinburgh - If you must abbreviate - at least try E'burgh without the extraneous 'o's'

>> Two or three (hopefully not howling) nights there<<

Hopefully 3 nights because 2 nights will net you one day on the island which is almost 'why bother territory' when you have two enormous drives on either end. You should take the bridge to and the ferry from Skye (or vice versa). No matter the route it will be 12+ hours car time Edinburgh > Portree and back.

Thanks. Sorry about the o’s. Treading into idiot American zone. I plead exhaustion. Reminded of a book I read about a world without o’s, wherein woebegone became webegne.
