Last minute panic re: Paris apartment in the 6th -- help!

Hello all. My husband and I are about to book an apartment via VRBO for our September trip to Paris (8 nights). The listing that we're considering is #38764: "St. Germain Elegant Studio/Loft" rented by Mr. & Mrs. Eric P. The location is in the 6th on the rue de Tournon, and looks to be just north of the Luxembourg Gardens per the map.

I've been looking at maps but I'm hoping to find some reassurance from experienced Paris travelers regarding walking distances, etc. This is my 2nd time to Paris, but might as well be my 1st since I was only there 2 days and didn't stay in the city (5 years ago). DH has never been. We're in our late 20's. We're trying to be as central as possible. I know that there's no such thing as "central to everything" in Paris, but I'd like to be within a 15-minute walk to SOMEthing (I guess the gardens. Can someone give me a reference point? How long would it take to walk to the Seine? The Louvre?

I guess I'm just nervous at this point -- I'm a big second-guesser and would like to hear from others that have stayed in/near this neighborhood before I sign the rental agreement.

TIA.

We stayed at Hotel Du Suez, on Blvd. St. Michel, just down about a block from the Lux gardens. (east I think)It took us 5 minutes tops to walk to the Seine/Notre Dame. It was a fabulous location. Yours should be, too. Tell us the address, that should help....

I think that's a terrific location (no, I've never stayed over there). Looks like you'll be right by the Garden.

I walk all over the place but when I'm on vacation I never time myself because I always stop to look at something. I would think that if you and your husband are fit and in your 20s, you should have no problem walking to the Cluny, Notre Dame, etc., within 20-30 minutes at a leisurely pace.

In Paris in the dead of winter we walked from the Eiffel Tower to our apartment on Ile Saint Louis at night. We didn't think twice about it. Of course, we did stop for drinks along the way...

Oh, also I think mappy.com will allow you to figure out walking routes/distances (and even estimate times?) if this is something you're worried about.

Someone will probably chime in with more info on that. But really, it's fun to walk around in Paris.

Thanks for the tips so far (and please, keep them coming!). The address is: 21 rue de Tournon, 75006.

And please don't think I'm opposed to walking in Paris I'm just trying to pinpoint the location and have some distance references in "minutes".

It was so hard to pick one location to reside in for our trip-- I feel like picking one area (6th) was equivalent to "missing out" on others (3rd, etc.). I have to keep reminding myself that we can visit them all while we're there. Like I said, I'm a second-guesser...and my husband puts up with it, thank goodness.

You can get a detailed map of any address in Paris at www.pagesjaunes.fr AND a photo of the building.

No Worries!!!!!!!!!! I am a horrible second-guesser and got a lot of guff for it on this board! You will have a wonderful time. It IS hard, when there are so many great areas to be situated in, in Paris! But as everyone kept pointing out to me, "It's Paris...It's all good!"

You're in a great location, just quiet enough not to be a tourist madhouse and no more than a leisurely 15 minute walk from all the sights along the Seine. If you head north from your apartment rue de Tournon becomes rue de Seine, guiding you across Blvd. St-Germain, past a slew of cafes, shops and art galleries to the Pont des Arts, the Louvre, Notre Dame to your right and Musée d'Orsay to your left.

If you go south instead, through the Luxembourg Gardens, within 15 minutes you have the Pantheon and the rue Mouffetard area on your left, Montparnasse and the famous watering holes like Closerie des Lilas and La Coupole directly ahead of you and the fashionable streets between St-Germain des Pres and the Bon Marché on your right.

Have a great trip. September is a lovely time to be in Paris.

Great location!
Your street leads right to the Palais du Luxembourg & Gardens, I love it around there! Not so busy, wonderful shops and bistros just blocks away! You can walk from the Luxembourg Gardens to the Seine in minutes!
Picture this- we walked from the 7th, a couple of blocks from the Eiffel Tower, to the 6th, most days when we were in Paris in March. It is all much closer than it seems on a map.
Don't worry about the location,

Hi tes,

If you look up your address at www.mappy.com, you will find your nearest metro stops are St. Sulpice, and Odeon.

Walk N on Rue Tournon, go left at rue st. Sulpice about 4 blocks to St. Sulpice (line 4).

Go right on rue St sulpice about 4 blocks to Odeon (4, 10).

Great location. I've been vacationing in Paris almost annually since 1976 and have stayed in the 6th district since around 1981.I was just there in March. You're in a wonderful area plus you'll have two metro lines close by....the 4 and the 10. Plus the bus lines are excellent. You can get a bus (#95)... directly in front of the church of St.Germain...rue Bonaparte across the street from the Louis Vuitton store... and be dropped off directly in front of the Louvre, for example. If I were you, I would go up to the department store... Bon Marche...metro stop- Sevres Babylone ...one stop from Mabillon on line 10...or two stops from metro Odeon...also on line 10... or you can walk...Go down to the basement where the book department is and pick up both a map book, with a map of each district of Paris... and a map book of each bus route....The ones I bought had a blue cover.I'll try to post the name of it tomorrow. I bought them to replace my 1981 red map book...that has totally fallen apart.Bon Marche has a big selection of map books and in all sizes. A friend came with me to Paris in 2003 and needed a map as it was her first trip. I took her to Bon Marche dept. store and she went wild. She was down in the basement for a good half an hour. I almost had to pull her out of there. She plans to make many return trips to Paris so wanted a really good map.Bon Marche is a great store and it's not crowded like Printemps and Galeries LaFayette are. Plus next door to Bon Marche is the Bon Marche gourmet supermarket that's fabulous. You can buy ready prepared food ther and take it back to your apartment. While in the area of Bon Marche...absolutely go to Poilane bakery on the rue Cherche Midi..in the low numbers. It's a ten-minute walk from Bon Marche. Then after leaving Poilane, walk up the street a few more steps and check out the new Karine Dupont handbag boutique. She finally opened her own boutique.I've owned her bags for years. If you have any questions about anything, page me in the Asia forum where I'm a regular and then I'll answer your questions. Have a ball. Oh, how do I access the company you rented from over the computer? Maybe I'll look for an apartment on the next trip. I've always stayed in hotels. Happy Travels!

The names of the books I mentioned above are...1)Paris Pratique Par Arrondissement by L'Indispensable 2)Le Bus Repertoire des 80 Lignes by L'Indispensable. They are both small paperbacks...perfect size.I bought them at Bon Marche department store...in the basement. Happy Travels!

I bought the first mapbook mentioned by Guenmai at a sidewalk news kiosk, for maybe 6€. It fits into a jeans pocket (about 4x6 inches) is has good detailed street maps, a bus map, a metro map, an RER map, and a street index.

Hello, small world because I'm in the process of renting this very same apartment first week of september. I know it's one of the best streets and neighborhoods in Paris so I'm very confident in that respect, you always wonder about the apartment itself even though it looks very good in pictures and they say it's just been renovated (april) but I like yourself am a second-guesser so I always over think the whole process and want to double and tripple check everything. By the way I'm new to this board, this thread came up doing a search for "rue de tournon" + "paris" and hope you don't mind if I ask what other info did you find on this apartment through your research. I'm curious. Thanks.

Hi Tesaniedi

I've just come across your posting on the very morning when I've paid the rent for the same apartment for this Christmas. Have you stayed there yet? If so how was it? We're staying for two weeks and need to ensure it's comfy due to my partner's recent op. Also, any tips about great food shops? We'll have to get out Christmas supplies pretty pronto as we arrive on the 23rd of December! Thanks

As stated already, the apartment's location is very central, next to Jardin du Luxembourg and a short walk to St. Germain and the Seine.
