Why take an escorted tour? Como is 40 minutes from Milan and Varenna is 1 hour from Milan.

Como is a nice town to walk around and is a 5 minute boat ride from Villa d'Este.

Varenna is a ferry ride from Belaggio. It's only a few minutes.

I recently did an overnight trip from Milan to Bellagio via Como. You dont need a guided tour - you should note that trains to Como leave from both the Central Station in Milan and the northern (Cadorna) station, we found the Cadorna station more convenient, and the train ticket was cheaper (about $3.00 one way vs. $5.00). If you want to go to Bellagio the bus is great! It runs frequently, costs only about $2.50 vs. $16 for the hydrofoil, and offers fabulous views. Have fun.

HI Glenn! My best advice would be to stay at the lakes rather than in Milan if you can!

Lugano, Switzerland is very nice. It is about 1 1/2 hours from Milan. The road ther runs the length of Lake Como from Como to Bellagio is incredible. Please note, that bAellagio is very small.
